Watching Vasyl Lomachenko fight is a gift to us as boxing fans and this weekend we will be able to see the universally recognised top 3 pound for pound fighter in action. He is well deserving of being ranked high on the majority of pound for pound lists. Now as fans, we crave competition and thus far in 2017 our craving has been satisfied, and while this fight most likely will not give us fierce competition, it will give us a preview of what’s to come.
While we enjoy watching Lomachenko display his excellent boxing skills, his ring generalship, fast hands and quick feet in the ring, his level of opposition is preventing him from receiving the credit he deserves from fans. A 135-pound showdown against Mikey Garcia or a 130-pound showdown against Guillermo Rigondeaux would give us the truest test to how great Lomachenko is. Some feel that Lomachenko looks unbeatable now and he would have to go up to 140 pounds and meet Terrence Crawford to even be considered an underdog.
This weekend Lomachenko faces Miguel Marriaga, a very tough and gritty fighter, who’s never been stopped. However, unless he lands a lucky punch, Marriaga simply doesn’t have the tools to defeat Lomachenko. We the fight fans crave competition, is there any competition for Vasyl at 130 pounds? The answer is NO, even with fellow title holders in Miguel Berchelt and Gervonta Davis. Lomachenko is an amazing fighter to watch, hopefully after this fight we can determine just how great he is.
