It’s Time to Accept the Age of Klitschko Instead of Looking for the Next Big Thing

We’ll never see Klitschko vs. Klitschko, but we can enjoy two dominant heavyweight champions

If the heavyweight champion of the world makes a defense of his titles, but no American fight fans are there to see it, does it really happen? That’s the case following the clinic that Wladimir Klitschko put on at the expense of Eddie Chambers. Another day, another challenger that couldn’t even come close to sniffing success in the ring against either Wlad or Vitali.

The Klitschko brothers have not managed to capitalize on their potential for stardom here in the states, despite small spurts of interest depending on the opponent that they have lined up and his potential on knocking one of them out. There are a few different reasons for this. For one thing, as the best two fighters in the division, it’s tough to swallow that we’ll never see them battle for the ultimate perch. There will never be a Klitschko vs. Klitschko contest to determine which one is truly the superior fighter.

Additionally, American fight fans are always looking for the next big thing, the next great American heavyweight as opposed to just the next great heavyweight period. With the Eastern Bloc dominance of the heavyweight titles over the past few years, there’s little homegrown talent for us to root for. Of course, a perceived unwillingness for Wlad to let the punches fly and go for the kill has also damaged his marketability.

But at the end of the day, there are two heavyweight champions who are 13-0 with 11 wins by stoppage in their current title reigns. Maybe the competition hasn’t been stellar and certainly they will never fight each other, but they can’t be blamed for either of those facts.
