Angel Luna (10-1-1, 6 KOs) returns to action on Saturday night, where he will compete on the undercard of the Miguel Cotto vs. Daniel Geale event at Barclays Center. A tough task awaits the Dominican prospect in Brooklyn, facing undefeated Puerto Rican Jose Lopez (15-0-1, 11 KOs).
“Angel has a tough fight in front of him, but I am expecting him to put on a really good performance,” said promoter Ronson Frank, who will also be working Luna’s corner with trainer Mateo De La Cruz. “We have been working on adding a few new components to his game that will make him a more polished fighter. Both mentally and physically, Angel is ready for the task he is facing on Saturday night, and it should be a really good match-up.”
Luna returns to the ring on Saturday night for the third time in 2015, with his last bout occurring on an episode of ESPN Friday Night Fights against tactical Philadelphia fighter Tevin Farmer. In that fight, Luna looked to apply pressure to the elusive and more experienced Farmer, but the end result was a decision defeat. Despite the loss, it served a great learning experience for the young Dominican.
Prior to the bout with Farmer, Luna fought on a February 13th Uprising Promotions card in Long Island City, Queens. In that contest, Luna dropped Jhovanny Collado twice in the opening round before cruising to landslide victory on the cards.
Undefeated Jose Lopez will be fighting outside of the Dominican Republic and his native Puerto Rico for just the second time of his professional career on Saturday night. His only other bout in the United States occurred on the undercard to Miguel Cotto vs. Sergio Martinez at Madison Square Garden, where Cotto defeated Martinez to earn the WBC crown he defends against Geale in this weekend’s main event.
