Friday night will be an evening which will determine the future for most of the featured fighters on this installment of Thompson Boxing Promotions “Path to Glory” card.
The main event of the night showcases featherweight elite, Juan Carlos “Mini” Burgos (26-1, 19 KOs) as he takes on Gilberto Sanchez Leon (29-10-2, 11 KOs) in a 10-round battle for supremacy. Burgos has much to prove. He vows to give everything that he has got in order to surpass boxing veteran Gilberto Sanchez Leon and to remain on the list as a viable title contender.
Burgos, who spectacularly kayoed Frankie Archuleta in February, showed that his prior loss against legendary Japanese champion Hozumi Hasegawa for the WBC featherweight title is part of history and nothing more.
“My fight against Sanchez Leon has a lot of significance for me, I have to show everyone that I got what it takes to capture the world title that I want. I know how bad a loss feels and although my entire team has helped me to rebound from it, I know I have to put it all on the line to get where I want to be,” said a highly motivated Burgos as he closed training camp in Tijuana, Mexico. “The featherweight division is deep in talent, but I want all those great champions and contenders to go through to me to prove they are the best, I know I got what it takes, just let me prove it,” said the champion blood lined, Burgos.
In the preceding 8-round lightweight bout co-main event 2008 Colombian Olympian Darley Perez (21-0, 16 KOs) and Sergio Rivera (25-7-2, 16 KOs) will battle it out for the honor of their respective countries.
With each man fighting for honor this match up promises to be an all out war.
Said Perez, “I have been fighting professionally for the last couple of years of my life and I love this energy and the adrenaline that runs through my body during the fight. I have a lot to prove to those who nay-say and feel that I am building my record too quickly. They can come and watch my third fight in the U.S. this Friday and see that I have got what it takes to be a champion. My country is rich in champions such as my fellow countrymen Robinson Pitalua, Juan Urango, Eliecer Julio, Antonio Cervantes and Yonnhy Perez to name a few. Sooner than later I will be added to that list too. My country has claimed this for me.”
In more thrilling action Southern California favorite featherweight who hails from La Puente, Abraham “Chamaco” Lopez (14-0, 10 KOs) will engage in an eight round matchup against hard-hitting Texan Olvin Mejia (4-3-3, 4 KOs).
For eight rounds, Lopez, who last defeated Aaron Garcia in April, will look to exchange with Mejia and continue to build his record and steadily grow his career, but the task looks to be daunting.
