Juergen Braehmer (40-2, 31 KOs) cannot wait for his next fight. On August 24, he will step into the ring at the Sport- und Kongresshalle Schwerin, taking on Stefano Abatangelo (17-2-1, 6 KOs) for the European Light Heavyweight Championship. It is a special occasion for Braehmer, as he has not fought in his hometown of Schwerin since April of 2012. The face-off with Abatangelo will also mark the 34-year-old German’s final test before seizing his WBO mandatory status to fight for the world title he once held. Therefore, Braehmer is fully focused on the task ahead of him.
“I have a good training camp and see myself improving every day,” said Braehmer.
“My first bout with Team Sauerland was in February against Eduard Gutknecht. I beat him but my current shape is miles ahead of the form I had back then.” The former world champion sees one fact as the most important since preparing under the tutelage of coach Karsten Roewer: “I have realized that I have not reached my potential yet – my best fights are still to come!”
On the other side, his opponent from Italy is ready for the biggest chance of his career.
“This is my opportunity to shine,” stated the 31-year-old from Montanaro, Italy.
He also has a game plan to make the European Champion uncomfortable. “I will be in his face from the beginning. I have to apply as much pressure as possible to have a chance of beating Braehmer.” Abatangelo promises: “I will make it a fight. Surrender is not an option as I will go out on my shield rather than quitting!”
Braehmer knows that he cannot overlook his challenger.
“His style is not the easiest to handle. Due to his disadvantage in height, he will try to brawl on the inside. Not many boxers in my position would have chosen such an opponent. Though, I need to get by him to see if I am ready again for a world title fight.” He assures: “After I beat Abatangelo, the WBO Belt is in my sight again!”
