Negotiations have intensified for a July 19th showdown – Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. vs. Gennady Golovkin. A Chavez vs. Golovkin fight would promise fireworks, and plenty of hard-hitting action.
For Chavez, he has a chance to score what would be the biggest, and toughest, win of his career. Golovkin has tons of hype behind him right now, and has been climbing the charts in terms of rankings and fan interest. For Golovkin, meanwhile, the fight offers a potential breakout opportunity. He’s never had a fight against somebody with the name or starpower of Chavez, and this fight on the center stage would really take him and his career to the next level.
So there’s a lot at stake for each man, and as mentioned, these are two offensive-minded, hard-hitting fighters. Golovkin vs. Chavez would likely be a brutal affair, and it’s easy to predict that this one would end within the distance one way or the other.
As of now, while there is now formal agreement in place, it looks like Golovkin vs. Chavez could headline an HBO pay-per-view event based in Los Angeles, California. The date of July 19th has been chosen to move the event past the end of the World Cup, the weekend before. It would also be one week ahead of a potential Canelo-headlined Showtime event, also perhaps a PPV. That means that fight fans will be shelling out a lot of cash to get a chance to see the big fights this year.
Stay tuned for more updates as we have them. Chavez vs. Golovkin would definitely be a fight to look forward to this summer as a boxing blockbuster.
