Amir Khan appears to remain frustrated that a bout with Floyd Mayweather Jr did not materialise during his career.

Khan was regularly linked with a showdown with Mayweather and the American even put a vote out on his social media in 2014 asking fans who he should fight between the Bolton man and Marcos Maidana.

Mayweather opted to face Maidana twice and Khan has now claimed that a proposed fight collapsed after a member of his team announced it, a decision which infuriated undefeated, five-weight world champion.

Speaking with Carl Froch on his YouTube channel Froch On Fighting, the 38-year-old said: “Do you know the reason the fight didn’t happen?

“Was because someone from my promotion announced it before he announced it.

“My side of the contract was signed, but then he said ‘I’m not going to fight you because you ended up announcing it.’

“He just kept me waiting on the bench for ages.

“He did a vote thing with me and Maidana.

“Obviously I got the most votes to fight him, but he still went and fought Maidana.”

Khan retired five years after Mayweather called time on his illustrious career, with the Brit losing to long-time rival Kell Brook in six rounds.

The clash with the Sheffield man happened far later than most fans had hoped for, with Brook also calling time on his career afterwards.

And Khan admits his compatriot would have given him a tough night’s work even in the prime of their careers.

“It would have been a hard fight,” he added.

“Kell’s always going to be a good fighter, maybe a lot of people would say me, because obviously I was in the wars then.

“I think maybe I had too many wars [and] towards the end of my career I had nothing left in the tank.

“Obviously I’m going to say myself and I’m sure Kell will say he would have won that fight, but it would have been a great fight anyway.”
