Amir Khan vs. Lamont Peterson Results:

On Saturday night, major boxing returned to the nation’s capital with the Amir Khan vs. Lamont Peterson junior welterweight title fight in a big way, with a sell out crowd at the Convention Center. Khan was setting out to make another defense of his 140 lb titles before seeking bigger fights at welterweight, while Peterson was looking to thrive in front of his hometown fans in Washington D.C. Rd 1: Both guys start feeling each other out. Khan hurts Peterson and staggers him quickly. He answers back. Khan then puts him down but it’s ruled a slip. Both guys looking very fast. Khan has more on his shots though. Khan then catches him against the ropes and sits him down again, this time it counts. Peterson looks dazed but not on wobbly legs. Surprised by Khan’s speed and aggression. Big Khan round.

Rd 2: Khan trying to walk Peterson down in this round. Picking his shots but opens up when he thinks Peterson feels it. Peterson gets staggers then steadies himself, slows things down and uses some defense. Then Peterson tries to come on and throw first. Khan’s round.

Rd 3: Peterson landing cleanly on Khan in the 3rd. Crowd is going nuts as Khan noise gets bloodied. They trade and each land a clean, flush shot that hurts the other. Khan pushes him off and throws a bomb. This is a brawl right now and a crazy crowd. Khan is a little bit hurt, he’s dancing around. Peterson digging to the boy then roughing him up. Peterson presses him up against the ropes and lands more shots. Awesome round of action, to Peterson.

Rd 4: Khan coming out behind his jab in this round. Peterson goes to the body, Khan waves him in and says that was fine, let’s do it some more. Khan misses with a huge uppercut. Peterson chasing him around the ring now. Khan lands a fast combination. Both of these guys are throwing bombs and swinging big. Peterson gets him on the ropes and digs to the body. Khan misses with an uppercut and Peterson counters with a quicker shot of his own. Close round. Round to Peterson.

Rd 5: Khan flicking the jab to start the round. Can’t get inside without getting caught right now. Stays behind the jab. Peterson trying to pick his spots. Khan more effective staying on his toes and jabbing here in this round. He slips to the canvas as he’s circling. Peterson bulling his way in and making this one ugly. Khan lands a flashy combination from the outside. Khan looking tired, breathing with hsi mouth open, but his round.

Rd 6: Khan jabbing and dancing to start the round. Peterson jabs to the body. Khan makes Peterson miss and throws some flashy shoe-shining combinations. Peterson digs to  the body. Lands another. Lands a combo on Khan, Khan holds out his arms again to say bring it on… but he looked hurt. Ref gives them some harsh warnings as they push one another around. Close round.

Rd 7: These two taking turns lighting one another up. Peterson begins just throwing seemingly dozens of unanswered thudding body shots that has Khan running around the ring. Peterson continues being the aggressor and landing those hard body shots. Khan loses a point at the end of the rove for pushing, round to Peterson.

Rd 8: Those body shots have just worn Khan out. Peterson gets Khan in the corner and lands some very nice shots as the crowd erupts. Khan finally gets himself back into it and lands some nice jabs. Peterson just keeps throwing to the body. Khan is going to be purple tomorrow from his chest to his hips. Khan tries to come forward, Peterson pushes him back with more body shots. Round to Peterson.

Rd 9: Peterson gets Khan up along the ropes and starts winding up and landing some huge right hands. Khan turns it around and unloads a series of his own right hand bombs which hurt Peterson. Khan lands a few body shots of his own, and Peterson responds. Khan lands an uppercut then staggers Peterson with a straight right. Khan lands a combination, Peterson starting to look tired.  Peterson lands a few shots on the ropes.

Rd 10: Peterson comes out strong to start the 10th. Don’t remember a guy throwing this much to the body, and so effectively, in a high profile fight like this in a while. Peterson lands a bomb with Khan pressed against the ropes. Khan answers with a few flurries. They trade at the bell as both guys seem a bit tired and sloppy, slower round compared to some of the others.

Rd 11: Khan working behind his jab and dancing to start the 11th. Peterson seems more tired now. Khan taking advantage to open up and land some shots. Peterson just wading in slowly. Crowd boos every time Khan tries to hold on. Alternating chants of “DC” and “Bolton” in the crowd. Peterson looking to rally light by pressing in and unloading. Khan’s round on activity.

Rd 12: Khan keeping his distance to start the 12th. Trying to light Peterson up from the outside. Peterson bulls in and lands some body shots. Khan hits Peterson on a break and loses another point. Whoa, that’s going to be huge. Didn’t think that deserved a point. Peterson chasing Khan around as Khan dances and tries to pick his shots. Peterson goes to the body. Round to Khan, but it’s close, and somebody is going to be unhappy tonight.

Wow. The crowd in DC is erupting. And those point deductions made the difference, giving Peterson the win.

Seth Mitchell vs. Timur Ibragimov

Rd 1: Mitchell comes out assertive. All of his punches seem to have some power behind them. Ibragimov landing some tricky shots and trying to make things sloppier on the inside. Mitchell trying to find a home for a double jab followed up by a straight right. Round to Mitchell.

Rd 2: Ibragimov definitely the craftier of the two, as you might expect. Tags Mitchell with a few nice right hands. But Mitchell then retaliates and hurts Ibragimov and opens up into him. Then decks him with a series of right hand bombs that staggers him and finally a left hook before the ref jumps in and stops it.

Big 2nd round TKO win for Seth Mitchell. Official time is 2:48 of round 2. The exact kind of exposure he needs for a very big 2012.

We’ll certainly be seeing a lot more of him in 2012 after that kind of performance. Maybe even in DC, as he seems to have a lot of support here in his local area. Crowd is nice and lubed up for Khan vs. Peterson next. On a funny note, Larry Merchant was loudly booed when he interviewed the fighters in the ring after their bout.

Undercard Results

10:45: Mitchell and Ibragimov are in the ring now, so it’s go time to the co-feature fight and the HBO televised portion of the card.

10:35 pm – All of the undercard fights have been over for a bit now, just waiting for Seth Mitchell vs. Timur Ibragimov bout to start now & for the HBO card to catch up. Lots of fighters in the house tonight, including Riddick Bowe, Bernard Hopkins, Adrien Broner, David Haye, Paul Williams, Marc “Too Sharp” Johnson, a new Hall of Famer, and more…

A final swing bout of the undercard featured undefeated light heavyweight Thomas Williams from Ft. Washington, MD, going against Reynaldo Rodriguez… Williams sent him careening to the canvas in first round and almost closed out the show there, with Rodriguez left stumbling back into the corner.

The fight was stopped early in the second with Williams applying nonstop pressure to close the show before the ringside doctor intervened.

Anthony Peterson was in action against Daniel Attah, another D.C.-based fighter, on the last main undercard fight before the HBO televised action, although there’s one 4-round swing bout scheduled in between.

Peterson lands some very nice, thudding body shots with Attah up against the ropes in the first. Difference in skill, speed and power all evident from the start of the fight. Very nice opening stanza for Peterson in the first.

Attah tries to work harder to get in close in the second. Peterson continues doing his thing though. Not as dominant of a round in the second, but another round for him.

Action continues in the third with Attah doing better getting inside and mixing things up, making it a bit ugly, but Peterson putting in great work to the body and every shot he lands seems to wear Attah down a bit.

Peterson pins Attah in the corner in the fourth and lands a series of unanswered shots before Attah finally squirms away and turns it around. His shots don’t faze Peterson much though, but he continues to press the action for the remainder of the round.

Attah on the retreat in the fifth but using a lot of head movement to avoid Peterson’s shots. Attah lands some clean shots of his own but doesn’t have any power behind them. Peterson walks through to land a few harder blows.

Peterson goes back to the body in the sixth and lands a series of hard shots to both sides. Controls the round, finds a home for his uppercut through Attah’s guard towards the end of the session.

Anthony gets him into the corner in the beginning of the 7th. Attah blocks some of his shots but a few powerful ones get through, Attah gets away but Peterson gets him right back to the ropes and continues firing away.

Peterson really trying to get Attah out in the final round. Lands some hard, clean shots. Attah goes down but ruled a slip. Peterson continues pressing and walking forward until the bell. A strong showing but it would have been nice to see Peterson get the stoppage.

All 3 judges have it 80-72 for Peterson, winner by Unanimous Decision.

Hot lightweight prospect Jamie Kavanagh met Ramesis Gil in a fight scheduled for six rounds…

Kavanagh began picking his shots in the beginning of the first round, but the two began trading and Gil tagged Kavanagh clean a few times, and reddened his face a bit. Kavanagh went back to boxing after that and scored some points with his jab and hook, looking surprised that he got hit and hurt.

In the second, Kavanagh stayed behind his jab and put on a boxing clinic. Gil couldn’t get inside or find a way to put on effective pressure. The two swung wildly at the bell and each got in a few shots. Kavanagh continued to keep his distance in the third as much as possible, with Gil firing away whenever he got into close quarters. Kavanagh looks fully into the fight now, after being caught a bit unprepared in the first.

The fourth round was quieter and the crowd got a bit restless. Kavanagh began finding a home for his straight right, and landed a few clean shots. Kavanagh got a bad cut over his right eye in the beginning of the fifth. Cut continued to get worse throughout the round, seemed to bother him a bit. Cut was caused by an accidental headbutt.

With the cut worsening in the sixth, Kavanagh tried to keep his distance and run out the clock a bit. Gil connected with a few hard shots at the very end of the round, staggering Kavanagh. With the cut and those hard shots, Kavanagh was lucky this was a six rounder and not an eight rounder.

Kavanagh escapes with his “0” intact but not his unblemished record.

Comebacking middleweight prospect Fernando Guerrero made short work of his overmatched opponent Robert Kliewer. He controlled the bout from the start and scored a knockout at :45 of the 5th round, after sending him down officially once (unofficially twice) in the fourth.

Guerrero improves to 22-1 with 17 KOs after suffering the first defeat of his career earlier in the year to Grady Brewer.
