From the beautiful new Stadion Miejski in Wroclaw, Poland, with 45,000 rowdy fans in attendance, Vitali Klitschko defended his WBC heavyweight title successfully over favorite son Tomasz Adamek. Adamek was game, as always, but ultimately was going up against a fighter with a 27 lb weight advantage, a huge height advantage, and the skills and thudding power to go along with it all.
In the words of Emmanuel Steward, “Vitali is fighting like a big, big man beating up a little man.” That sums up the way the bout played out. Vitali would earn the 10th rd TKO when the referee broke the action with 42 seconds left in the stanza, after Vitali had been pouring it on and Adamek finally had nothing left to offer.
By the end of the contest, Adamek was bleeding and busted up, and while disappointed in the way the fight turned out, didn’t protest the stoppage. Blood was spurting out of his mouth and had been streaming down his face for most of the contest, and Klitschko was just too big and too much for him to handle.
In the second round, Vitali pounded Adamek with a thunderous straight right that sent him tumbling back towards the ropes. Adamek was able to hang onto the ropes without falling down and the referee failed to call a knockdown, as he should have.
In the sixth though, about one minute into the round another monster right hand sent Adamek flying back, this time into the turnbuckle. The referee correctly called this one a legitimate knockdown, which it was.
Vitali continued to control the action throughout the entire bout, using his jab to dictate the action, control spacing and pummel his man into submission. Adamek had very few successful moments in the fight, but the first 3-4 rounds were competitive.
Klitschko stumbled to the canvas at the end of the 8th round, with no punches having been landed against him. He was fine, but after the way that his bout against Odlanier Solis ended, there must have been some concern in his corner that this time he suffered a freak knee or leg injury. Unfortunately for Adamek, that wasn’t the case.
If you didn’t see the Klitschko vs. Adamek results live, HBO will be replaying the bout this evening as a part of their Yuriorkis Gamboa vs. Ponce De Leon telecast, all of which will air after the latest installment of Mayweather-Ortiz 24/7.
