Hearn wants Welshman to make statement against Australian champion
Lee Selby will defend his Commonwealth featherweight title against unbeaten Australian champion Corey McConnell on April 20 at Blackpool’s Winter Gardens in Betfair’s ‘The New Life of Brian’, live on Sky Sports.
McConnell (11-0-1) took the Aussie belt with a points win over Ernie Gonzales Jr. in October and will be Selby’s first opponent under his new promoter Eddie Hearn.
The Welshman is set for a busy year as Hearn plots a route to a World title shot for the 26 year old, starting in Blackpool and continuing when he co-headlines a huge show in Cardiff on June 15 alongside Gavin Rees.
“I can’t wait to watch Lee in action and he will have his work cut out against a motivated McConnell,” said Hearn. “McConnell has an exciting style and will come to fight but in my opinion Selby is the new star of British boxing and I’m looking for him to make a major statement in Blackpool.”
Brian Rose’s WBO Inter-Continental light middleweight title fight against Joachim Alcine tops the bill in Lancashire with Scotty Cardle boxing for his first title, taking on Maxi Hughes for the Central Area lightweight belt.
China Clarke defends his English cruiserweight title against Blackpool’s Matty Askin, while Team GB stars Callum Smith and Olympic captain Thomas Stalker continue their exciting pro careers on a stacked undercard which also features Dudley middleweight Ryan ‘The Tank’ Aston.
Tickets for Betfair’s ‘The New Life of Brian’ cost £40 unreserved, £80 Ringside and £150 VIP and are available through www.matchroomboxing.com or by calling 01277 359900.
