Two heated rivalries in the British boxing universe take center stage today, with the rematch between Tyson Fury and Dereck Chisora, and the match of unbeatens in the middleweight division, Billy Joe Saunders and Chris Eubank Jr. There’s been plenty of trash talk and anticipation for both fights, but now it’s finally time to settle it all in the ring.
Right here you’ll find our live coverage of the Saunders vs. Eubank Jr. and Fury vs. Chisora II fights. Take a look and see who gets the upper hand in both of these match-ups.
Fury vs. Chisora II Results
After Saunders vs. Eubank left the crowd electrified with a tense, action-packed first fight, Fury vs. Chisora fell flat, and the crowd turned silent and then turned to boos.
From the start, Dereck Chisora simply didn’t have it physically, didn’t have it mentally, or both. He never put up much of a fight as Fury used his superior size to simply keep Chisora away and at bay. If Chisora was just waiting for Fury to get sloppy before hammering home a couple of fight changing shots, the opportunity never presented itself.
After a few rounds, Chisora’s willingness to simply plod through the bout did indeed dumb down Fury’s action as well. But Fury stayed focused enough on the task at hand to just stay behind the jab and keep compiling points.
As for Fury, he was dominant in the fight but it seems like it was simply a matter of him showing up. I don’t think we learned anything about how he would fare against Klitschko, nor did we see anything which should give anyone any type of brilliant hope that Fury would have a better than average shot. Would have liked to see him turn it up more, even if he was simply playing it safe.
The fight’s stopped after 10 rounds, and Tyson Fury wins by TKO. The crowd is less than pleased.
Saunders vs. Eubank Jr. Results
In the highly anticipated grudge match between rivals Billy Joe Saunders and Chris Eubank Jr, the crowd was fired up and ready for battle. While Eubank began the fight looking for quick, flashy shots, Saunders was steady and busier. Coming forward, working behind his jab, and landing the bigger punches, while Eubank was looking for big single shots and largely missing.
By swinging and missing big, he also afforded Saunders more opportunities to land clean counters. Saunders fought smart, refusing to engage with Eubank in a battle of winging big punches. Eubank was caught off balance frequently, and looking to make things ugly, tying up and clinching, throwing inside shots. All told, Saunders swept the first third of the fight.
Eubank finally looked to win his first round of the fight in the 6th. Here, he was able to use his athleticism to lead and get off big shots. A low blow may have helped as well. Meanwhile he did a better job with his defense, avoiding incoming fire from Saunders.
In the 7th, Eubank continued to build some momentum. He trapped Saunders along the ropes once or twice and looked to unload. But Saunders was able to reverse him on several occasions. Eubank’s physical size and strength looked to begin to make a difference. Will Saunders wear down?
Round 8 saw more back and forth action, but Eubank continued to find a home for a few big punches. At one point he nailed Saunders a few times and Saunders shook it off, saying no you didn’t hurt me – but we all know that always means that a fighter was indeed rocked. The Eubank uppercut dominated the start of Round 9, but Saunders rallied behind a few big right hands, and a few sloppy Eubank mistakes. That was a hard round to score, each man landed head snapping shots.
Saunders reasserted control in Rd 10, utilizing his jab and landing a few right hands. Eubank seemed to be tiring substantially here. Eubank had a brief flurry, but round to Saunders. Eubank’s corners said he needed to score the stoppage to win, and we agree.
Eubank obliges in Rd 11 by looking for the KO. He mostly misses but he lands a few monster uppercuts. Saunders shows an excellent chin by standing up to those shots, then returning fire with a right hand of his own.
In Round 12, Eubank found a home for a few homerun uppercuts… but Saunders withstood them. He took the best shots from Eubank and didn’t go down. Eubank did a great job trying to close the show, but it looks to be too little too late.
Saunders should have it in 115-113 fashion.
Official scorecards: Split Decision 115-114 Saunders, 116-113 Eubank, 115-113 Saunders
