Teofimo Lopez has labelled Eddie Hearn a “liar” after he suggested that he can’t sell out arenas.

Lopez, who is signed with Bob Arum’s Top Rank, boxed under Hearn’s Matchroom banner after he won the purse bid to stage the Brooklyn man’s clash with George Kambosos Jr in 2021.

However, any good will between the pair has seemingly disappeared over recent months with both taking swipes at each other in the media.

In the lead-up to Devin Haney’s fight with Regis Prograis last month, Hearn questioned the Brooklyn man’s draw at the gate, particularly in his victory over Josh Taylor in June, in which he secured the WBO super lightweight crown.

“People like Teofimo Lopez,” Hearn told reporters.

“I’ve done a fight with Teofimo Lopez; the undisputed lightweight world championship.

“We just sold out the Theater [at Madison Square Garden].

“And when he boxed Josh Taylor for the unified championship at 140, they couldn’t even sell out the Theater. And that’s a massive fight.”

‘The Takeover’ has fired back at the British promoter and insists his bout with ‘The Tartan Tornado’ was a sell out in New York.

“Eddie Hearn is a fluke and a liar,” Lopez told Boxing Social.

“He’s lying to you guys.

“It’s competition so listen to me.

“If I was under Matchroom it would be a whole different story, but we’re right here with Top Rank.

“So, the thing that he said about me saying I can’t sell out arenas and stuff.

“Not only did we sell out me and Josh Taylor for the Theater in Madison Square Garden, do you know what else we did that was great?

“We hit the highest gross in boxing history presenting in the Theater at Madison Square Garden.”

The 26-year-old makes a first defence of his crown against Jamaine Ortiz on February 8 at the Michelob Ultra Arena in Las Vegas.

The two-weight world champion claimed he would consider retirement in the immediate aftermath of his win over Taylor, but has now confirmed that he never intended to hang up his gloves.

“I had to milk the game,” he added.

“I wasn’t going to retire. It was a publicity stunt.

“You’ve got to know how to work the media too.”
