WBA International Welterweight Champion Luis Collazo has signed on with influential adviser Al Haymon following his thrilling Jan. 30 knockout victory at Barclays Center over former WBC Welterweight World Champion. Victor Ortiz.
“I’m excited to be joining Team Haymon,” said Collazo. “I’m looking forward to the doors this opportunity is going to open for me. I can’t wait to get this partnership going.”
A proud native of Brooklyn, Collazo (35-5 18 KOs) held the WBA Welterweight World Championship from 2005-06. Collazo has won four straight fights, including his second round knockout over Ortiz. Three of those victories took place at Barclays Center, making Collazo one of the arena’s staple fighters. The FOX Sports 1 telecast of the Ortiz vs. Collazo fight was the highest rated boxing event on the franchise to date.
Collazo joins a large stable of fighters in the welterweight division currently advised by Haymon including Marcos “El Chino” Maidana, Shawn “Showtime” Porter, Keith “One Time” Thurman, Devon Alexander “The Great”, Adrien “The Problem” Broner, Lucas “The Machine” Matthysse, Paulie “Magin Man” Malignaggi, and of course, the pound-for-pound king, 10-time five-division World Champion Floyd “Money” Mayweather.
“I’m looking forward to a big year ahead and signing with Team Haymon is just one of the first steps,” said Collazo. “He works with a lot of guys in my division and with this new step in the right direction, I’m sure I will be fighting some of them in the near future.”
Collazo also has his eyes on the big prize; he has voiced his desire to fight Mayweather. “God-willing I’ll get the chance to be in the ring against Mayweather and prove what I’ve always thought, that I’m the best in the world.”
