Undefeated junior welterweight Karim Mayfield thrashed previously undefeated fighter Raymond Serrano on Friday in the main event of Friday Night Fights. Mayfield simply had way too much speed and power, and Serrano couldn’t deal with the arsenal which he had to go up against.
Mayfield sent Serrano down right at the end of the 4th round. Serrano was clearly hurt from the shot and wasn’t fully recovered by the time the 5th began. It took just 45 seconds for Mayfield to finish the job, punctuated with a straight right that led to the TKO finish.
Of course, it didn’t help that there was serious confusion and drama in Serrano’s corner in between the 4th and 5th round. His cornermen were yelling at each other – apparently one wanted to stop the fight, and one didn’t – and failed to properly take care of their charge.
Serrano had also been down in the third.
Mayfield-Serrano Video Highlights
While the pre-fight chatter mentioned that this was a very competitive bout between two undefeated prospects – and some people strangely forecasted Serrano giving Mayfield serious trouble – I never figured that Mayfield would be bothered much.
Having seen Serrano in person last summer on the undercard to the Delvin Rodgriguez-Pawel Wolak fight, he simply did not seem to be at the same level as Mayfield. On that night, he took major damage and had to grit out a very rough and tumble type of encounter against Daniel Sostre.
Nothing against Serrano – he’s still just 22 years old, and I hope he recovers, grows from the experience, and develops into a better fighter. However, Mayfield was simply way too much, and that should have been clear from the get go.
Whether or not “Hard Hitta” can pull off the same tricks against the upper class of the junior welterweight division is another question, of course.
