It’s no secret that boxing fans have been unhappy with how much money they spend on pay-per-views. They cost too much, they are held too frequently, and the vast majority of the time, they feature inadequate fights for the money. Most fans have been eagerly anticipating the Mayweather vs. Ortiz Star Power PPV. However, word has gotten out that the privilege of ordering such a bout could cost you as much as $70.
The HD feed for the Mayweather-Ortiz PPV will run you $69.95, with the standard feed still running you a lofty 60 bucks, $59.95. That would represent an all-time high for a single PPV, as the price has gradually increased for big events from $49.95, to $54.95 and higher, and now the high definition charge always kicks in and costs you an extra $10.
Floyd Mayweather vs. Victor Ortiz is an intriguing and hopefully exciting match. However, the Star Power PPV card has never been fantastic. Seeing Saul Alvarez in action is nice, but Canelo vs. Alfonso Gomez isn’t exactly a big-time match. Erik Morales vs. Lucas Matthysse promised excitement, even for a bogus 140 lbs title, but it now looks like Matthysse has withdrawn. That leaves the other supporting bout as Jessie Vargas vs. Josesito Lopez, a decent enough opener for a 4th fight, but a terrible 3rd fight with Canelo vs. Gomez being the only other supporting bout.
So get ready to fork over $7o for the Mayweather-Ortiz PPV, undercard be damned.
