Sick of buying boxing pay-per-views every month? Think you shell out too much money to be a boxing fan? Well, get ready for this one…
The “Mayhem” Floyd Mayweather vs. Marcos Maidana pay-per-view is going to cost $77.99 to purchase with HD. The prices keep on going up and up, and while Mayweather continues racking up honors as the world’s highest paid athlete, fight fans are continually asked to dig deeper and deeper into their own pockets.
Let’s make this simple — the cost of this pay-per-view is ridiculous. Beyond the fact that we’ve already succumbed to the idea that anytime a fighter such as Mayweather fights, that it’s going to be on PPV no matter what, the escalating costs are out of control. It wasn’t all too long ago that pay-per-views cost $39.99 or $44.99, or hell, $54.99. And it wasn’t exactly a bargain then, either.
But now it’s nearly 80 bucks! And for what?
A rematch of a close but conclusively won first fight, and an undercard with a lot of “not much”. Leo Santa Cruz against his latest in a long line of wildly overmatched opponents. Mickey Bey getting a title shot he doesn’t deserve against Miguel Vazquez. Alfredo Angulo in a fight nobody cares about. And eighty dollars for the privilege.
You have got to be kidding me.
Every time Mayweather fights it’s on PPV. Every time Manny Pacquiao fights it’s on PPV. Canelo Alvarez has been moved in that direction as well.
Month after month, we have to buy fights we are already supposedly subscribing to see, and the fights are mismatches, the undercards are atrocious, and the price tag keeps on getting bumped up. Shame on the promoters and the powers that be for this latest horrendous trend.
Just like in a rugged boxing match, it’s time to fight back. They’re fighting dirty, so you have to fight dirty too. Don’t buy the PPV. Hit ’em where it hurts until they’re forced to change their own strategy.
