Mayweather vs. Pacquiao Round by Round Updates
Rd 1: Mayweather comes out taking centre ring and forcing Pacquiao back. Lands two solid right hands to take a cagey opening round.
Rd 2: Pacquiao starts to edge Mayweather back but his swings are largely missing. Mayweather looks calm and ties up on the inside. Pacquiao needs to get his footwork going, he’s standing in front of Mayweather too much. Tight round, just to Mayweather.
Rd 3: Mayweather again moving well and avoiding Pacquiao’s wilder forays. A borderline shot sneaks in from Mayweather. Spoiling and an untidy fight.
Rd 4: Pacquiao lands a counter straight left that saps the energy from Mayweather’s legs temporarily. Pacquiao pounds him against the ropes and scores to the body and a nice right hook. Pacman is in the fight!
Rd 5: Mayweather puts the genie back in the bottle in this round, pawing the jab and keeping Pacquiao out of range. Connects with a solid right hand too. Pacquiao thinking too much and threw very little. Great recovery round for Mayweather.
Rd 6: Pacquiao ups the tempo in this one but initially struggles to land. That changes when he lands a straight left and follows it up while Mayweather shakes his head on the ropes.
Rd 7: Pacquiao lands a couple of jabs but generally is still struggling to pin Mayweather down. A tight round but just edged to Mayweather.
Rd 8: Mayweather is controlling the fight with his jab as Pacquiao becomes wilder with some of his attacks. Mayweather takes it with solid punch picking.
Rd 9: Mayweather again punctuates the round with the cleaner shots. Pacquiao continues to move forward but isn’t really pressuring him. Mayweather has this fight in the bag. All he needs to do now is make the final bell.
Rd 10: Mayweather’s jab is again proving troublesome for Pacquiao as he circles the ring. A quiet but effective round for Mayweather.
Rd 11: Mayweather lands a wonderful uppercut on the inside as Pacquiao approaches. Mayweather more assertive in this round. Pacquiao has been reduced to wild lunges.
Rd 12: Pacquiao comes forward in vain again but Mayweather dances and enjoys the final round of what has been a masterclass. Say what you want about him, but he is the greatest fighter of this generation and tonight has definitively proved that. A very one-sided superfight.
Undercard Results
Leo Santa Cruz UD10 Jose Cayetano (100-90 x3)
Santa Cruz began and ended this one-sided, rather dull contest on the front foot. The monotony was punctuated by Cayetano’s occasional switching of stance but Santa Cruz was never really tested. Cayetano landed the occasional shot as he leaned on the ropes, using them to take some of the power out of Santa Cruz’s shots but generally speaking Santa Cruz came forward and pressured without ever really threatening to get his opponent out of there. A very average but ultimately victorious featherweight debut for Santa Cruz.
Vasyl Lomachenko KO9 Gamalier Rodriguez
Rodriguez started out well with a surprisingly competitive opening round. Gradually Lomachenko began to establish his superiority, however. By the fourth round the Ukrainian was putting on a show with an array of shots from multiple angles. His balance, footwork and punch picking was superb again tonight, and Rodriguez was simply unable to keep up. Rodriguez landed some shots below the belt that eventually saw him have a point deducted after a number of warnings from the referee Earl Brown. Lomachenko hurt Rodriguez to the body, sending him to the canvas with a straight left downstairs in the 7th round. Rodriguez got up but continued to be completely outboxed. Lomachenko finished it in the 9th with a beautiful combination to the body and head. Rodriguez went down and consciously didn’t get up before the count. The fight, or exhibition, was over and Lomachenko had his win.
