Having received a strong confirmation of support from the Mexican Boxing Federation, local authorities and an intriguing offer from the host broadcaster in Mexico (Televisa Deportes Network), World Series of Boxing has decided to confirm Mexico City Guerreros for the second WSB season.
WSB Chief Operating Officer, Ivan Khodabakhsh explained this decision as follows. “Taking into consideration the strong heritage of boxing and the importance of our sport in Central and South America, it was felt that maintaining a Franchise in Mexico was a great opportunity for the continued growth of the WSB. WSB Americas investor wanted to have a Franchise in a location where the market has a high potential and Mexico offers a much better local support than Miami. This decision also reflects the true global character of WSB as a world league, having a Franchise in Mexico, will ensure that for the second season, there will be one Franchise per country”.
By signing a memorandum of agreement with WSB, the Mexican Boxing Federation has shown his strong support to the sport of boxing in the country as Ricardo Contreras, FMBA President confirmed. “After a convincing first season with the Mexico City Guerreros finishing at the foot of the semi-finals, it was absolutely crucial for the Mexican Boxing Federation to keep on going with the support of WSB in Mexico. Mexico is a country with more than 100 years in Boxing, and we are convinced that the WSB has a bright future in our country and that it gives Mexican boxers the great opportunity to develop their skills in the near future.”
This decision was also made possible by an intriguing offer received from the Mexican cable television network, Televisa Deportes Network (TDN), who broadcasts a variety of international and national sports events 24/7 to Mexico, Guatemala, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Honduras, Costa Rica, Panama and the Dominican Republic. “The World Series of Boxing is an innovative way of seeing the sport of boxing and we are very proud to be associated to such a competition. We will help as much as we can WSB to promote boxing and give the 2011-2012 season the best exposure we can, especially in Mexico”, said Juan Carlos Rodriguez, Director of TDN.
Mexico City Guerreros will face the WSB Franchises in Baku/Azerbaijan, Beijing/China, Istanbul/Turkey, Leipzig/Germany and defending champions from France, Paris United in Group B. They will start their regular season in Germany on the weekend of 11/12 November 2011.
