Miguel Cotto has ended his long radio-silence, confirming reports that he was set for an announcement. Cotto revealed on ESPN’s First Take program this morning that he’s signing with Roc Nation Sports. He joins Andre Ward in the Roc Nation stable.
Cotto and his team also revealed that the Middleweight Champion will be returning to the ring on June 6th, fighting once again in New York. The fight may be at either Madison Square Garden, where he usually fights on the eve of the Puerto Rican Day parade, or at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn.
While no opponent has been finalized, talk is that Cornelius Bundrage is the frontrunner to land the fight. That would certainly be a disappointing fight for Cotto, who will have spent one year on the shelf since his monumental upset win over Sergio Martinez.
He turned down $10 million to face Canelo Alvarez, and a fight couldn’t be agreed to between their two sides. Gennady Golovkin is out there as the clear best challenger, and has cleared out the rest of the division.
But instead, he’s fighting a 154 lbs titlist in a match which would have little appeal beyond Cotto’s return in and of itself, and the fact that he always will have a rabid fan base in New York, particularly over that weekend.
Stay tuned for more details on Miguel Cotto’s next fight as we get them.
