The rumored Miguel Cotto vs. Delvin Rodriguez clash is now official for October 5 in Orlando. Cotto vs. Rodriguez will be the inaugural boxing card at Orlando’s Amway Center, and the fight will be televised on HBO.
Cotto is looking to come back from two straight defeats, unanimous decision losses to Floyd Mayweather and Austin Trout. His record now stands at 37 (30) – 4, and the three-division titleholder is in need of a big win to maintain his status as a top contender in the division.
Rodriguez is currently on a two fight winning streak after suffering his own setback to Austin Trout. With a record of 28 (16) – 6 – 3, the always-tough and typically entertaining Rodriguez is looking to stamp his own ticket back towards title contention, instead of being relegated to opponent status.
This is a solid comeback fight for Cotto against a respected opponent, and a fringe top-10 caliber fighter in the junior middleweight division. Still, it’s a bout that he should be expected to win, if you believe he has one final run left in him.
Rodriguez won’t be an easy out, particularly with his size advantage over Cotto. However, unless Cotto is shopworn, he should be able to outclass him here.
The opening press conference for Cotto vs. Rodriguez will be held tomorrow, Tuesday, July 23 in the Disney Atrium of the Amway Center at 2pm, with the public invited to attend.
Keep on checking back for more updates regarding the fight and the rest of the card, which could potentially include a fight between Terence Crawford and Yuriorkis Gamboa.
