Mayweather is set to earn $41.5 million for his fight against Saul “Canelo” Alvarez on September 14. That shatters the previous high of $33 million for Evander Holyfield in his rematch against Mike Tyson. It also shatters Mayweather’s personal best, which had been $32 million. Mayweather achieved that twice, hauling in that guarantee for each of his last two bouts, against Miguel Cotto and Robert Guerrero.
As for Canelo Alvarez, reports were saying that he was set to make $12.5 million for the bout. However, Richard Schaefer has since said that’s not the case, according to a report on Yahoo! Sports from Kevin Iole. Here’s what Schaefer had to say via email:
I am not at liberty to disclose how much he makes, but it is substantially less than [$12.5 million.]”
Of course, you shouldn’t feel too bad for Canelo Alvarez. He’ll surely earn at least an 8-figure payday for the bout including pay-per-view sales, and he’s also showcased on the cover of the latest ESPN the Magazine issue (seen above), which has extensive coverage of the bout.
Finally, we also have another video preview for the bout. This is Showtime’s official pay-per-view promo of The One. Check it out:
So clearly there is plenty to talk about as the countdown to Mayweather vs. Canelo continues on. Fight night is less than 10 days away, so soon enough we’ll be able to finally put all the talking and build-up aside and focus on the fight itself, and which man will be The One.
