Miguel Cotto smashed middleweight champion Sergio Martinez on Saturday night at Madison Square Garden, in the headline event of an HBO pay-per-view. Cotto scored 3 first round knockdowns and didn’t let up after that, closing the show when Martinez’s corner halted the action for good after the 9th round.

Cotto was the underdog in this fight, but even the people who backed him to win likely didn’t think it would play out quite like this. Cotto took control from the immediate onset of the fight, and he blew right past Martinez. Whether it was age, inactivity, knee issues or all of the above, Martinez never really even got into the fight.
The way it all went down makes the Cotto vs. Martinez results all the more shocking and surprising. And as you can see from these great photos of the fight, Martinez really took a beating.
On the undercard, Andy Lee scored a come from behind knockout with one punch, Javier Maciel defeated Jorge Melendez, and Marvin Sonsona got his revenge against Wilfredo Vazquez Jr.
