Chris Algieri shocked the boxing world on Saturday night at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, defeating “The Siberian Rocky” Ruslan Provodnikov, taking his title strap, and adding even more intrigue to the stacked 140-lb division. Right here, we have much more for you on the shocking Provodnikov vs. Algieri results, including fight night photos, video highlights of the action, and video of the post-fight press conference as well.
Algieri won a split decision, with two scores of 114-112 for Algieri, and the third Provodnikov, 117-109. There’s definitely a difference of opinion and many do believe that Provodnikov deserved to win the fight, but you can’t argue with the passion and heart of Algieri either way.
We’ve always known that Provodnikov can be outboxed, but we’ve also always known that a fighter would have to go through some hell to accomplish that mission. That’s exactly what Algieri did, as he battled back from early knockdowns and a terrible cut and swelling that left him essentially fighting with one eye for much of the fight.
Bloodied and bruised, Algieri won the night thanks to his heart and grit. In what was by far the biggest fight of his career, and the best opposition, Algieri rose to the occasion and was rewarded for his efforts with a breakout performance.
In the co-feature, Demetrius Andrade outclassed Brian Rose, winning his fight with ease via 7th rd TKO. Way too athletic, strong and skilled for Rose, who was a mandatory challenger for his title. Hopefully we see Andrade mix it up with some of the other big fighters in his weight class with this win out of the way.
Enjoy all of the great coverage on Provodnikov vs. Algieri, and stay tuned for more over the coming days, including divisional rankings updates to the junior welterweight division.
