More than 400 Olympic hopefuls ready for final USA Boxing qualifier next week

More than 400 Olympic hopefuls will travel to Memphis, Tenn., for the Pathway to Glory Men’s Trials Qualifier III, October 26-31, at the Memphis Cook Convention Center. The event is the final qualifying opportunity for the Olympic Trials for Men’s Boxing and boxers from across the country hope to earn one of 20 Olympic Trials berths up for grabs in Memphis.

The 414 male athletes registered for the tournament marks the most of any of the Olympic Trials qualifiers and ensures that the champions in each of the 10 men’s weight divisions will have earned their gold medals. The two finalists in the 10 weight divisions will claim the final spots in the Olympic Trials for Men’s Boxing, December 7-12 in Reno, Nev.

The light welterweight division is the largest of the 10 weight classes with a whopping 74 athletes registered to compete in the 141-pound weight division. 2014 USA Boxing National Champion Abraham Nova (Albany, N.Y.) and 2014 National Golden Gloves champion Maliek Montgomery (Macon, Ga.) are both seeking their Olympic Trials berths in Memphis after previously winning national titles.

The lightweight class is the next biggest weight division with 68 entries in the Pathway to Glory Men’s Trials Qualifier III. 2014 USA Boxing National Championships silver medalist Jousce Gonzalez (Glendora, Calif.) is looking to join his little sister Jajaira in the Olympic Trials with a top two finish in Memphis. His younger sister will compete in the lightweight division at the Olympic Trials in Women’s Boxing in Memphis next week while her brother chases his own trials berth.

There are 63 athletes registered to compete in the welterweight division in Memphis. Former junior champion Keoni Adric (Haleiwa, Hawaii) will look to break through in the elite division at the men’s trials qualifier in Memphis.

A former youth star and reigning National Golden Gloves champion is slated to compete for an Olympic Trials spot in the middleweight division, which boasts 63 competitors as well. Two-time youth national champion Charles Conwell (Cleveland Heights, Ohio) will be back in action at the qualifying tournament next week after winning his first Golden Gloves title in May.

There could be a rematch of the 2014 USA Boxing National Championships championship in the light heavyweight division in Memphis. 2014 National Champion Julius Butler (St. Louis, Mo.) and silver medalist Jasper McCargo (Oakland, Calif.) are two of the 42 athletes registered in the light heavyweight division. Edgar Berlanga (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and Julio Perez Campusano (Roxbury, Mass.) just fell short of qualifying in previous opportunities and will look to punch their tickets for the Olympic Trials in Memphis.

Thirty-six athletes are registered to compete in the bantamweight division in Memphis and two former Junior Olympic champions from central California will vie for the top spot at the event. Efren Lopez (Fresno, Calif.) and Isidro Ochoa (Fresno, Calif.) are both chasing Olympic Trials berths in the final qualifying event.

In the heavyweight division, 2013 USA Boxing National Champion Michael Hilton (Trenton, N.J.) is back for a run at the Olympic Trials. He will join 27 other athletes registered to compete in the heavyweight division in Memphis. 2014 USA Boxing National Championships silver medalist Sardius Simmons (Flint, Mich.) will box in the 201-pound weight division at the Memphis Cook Convention Center as well.

Twenty-two athletes have registered to compete in Memphis in the super heavyweight division and the roster includes the 2014 Youth National Championships silver medalist and 2014 USA Boxing National Championships silver medalist. John Luna (Milwaukee, Wis.) won silver in the 2014 Youth National Championships but he hasn’t made his mark on the elite division yet. He will look to change that by qualifying for the Olympic Trials in Memphis. Elvis Garcia (Tacoma, Wash.) has medaled in the USA Boxing National Championships more than once but he is looking to claim the top spot at the Men’s Qualifier III next week.

The flyweight division boasts the lone returning Olympic Trials champion. 2012 titlist Eros Correa (San Jose, Calif.) fell short of qualifying internationally for the 2012 Olympic Games but he hopes to return to the 2016 Olympic Trials with a top two finish in Memphis. He is one of 11 flyweight athletes registered to compete in the Pathway to Glory Men’s Trials Qualifier III.

The light flyweight division is not only the lowest weight class but also has the fewest number of entries. Seven athletes have registered to compete in the 108-pound weight division in Memphis.

All of the tournament competitors will arrive in Memphis on Saturday, prior to the general weigh-in and subsequent draw on Sunday. The tournament brackets will be released on posted on the USA Boxing website upon completion.

The Memphis event is the fifth qualifying event for the Olympic Trials for Men’s Boxing. Six athletes in each weight division earned spots through top finishes at the WSB and World Championship Team Trial or USA Boxing National Championships or by advancing to the finals of the first two Men’s Trials Qualifiers in June and September.
