Jaime Munguia made a return from a first professional defeat, as he eventually wore down the gritty Erik Bazinyan for a tenth round knockout win in their super middleweight meeting at Desert Diamond Arena in Glendale, Arizona.

A former world champion at super welterweight, Munguia (44-1, 35 KOs) was last seen in May, losing his perfect record to his fellow Mexican, Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez, who scored a knockdown on the way to a wide points success.

Armenian-born Canadian Bazinyan (32-1-1, 23 KOs) wasn’t expected to provide too much of a test for Munguia, and he was coming off a draw in his last outing, a ten round stalemate against Shakeel Phinn in Montreal in May.

Bazinyan began well in this one, working off his jab in the first couple of rounds, and he pushed Munguia back in the third to continue his bright start. Munguia had a decent fourth, but Bazinyan went back to his jab to good success in the fifth, continuing to frustrate the Mexican.

That seemed to be where his challenge started to fade though, as Munguia turned up the heat, walking Bazinyan down in the sixth, and landing heavily to the body, and the seventh saw Bazinyan buzzed from a combination. Munguia was now nullifying his opponent with his pressure, and although he toned the assault down in the ninth, the ending wasn’t far in coming.

The conclusion came in round ten, where Munguia landed a left hand that shook Bazinyan up, and a two fisted follow-up assault had the underdog reeling, and he eventually fell to the canvas, where he was unable to beat the referee’s count.
