Sam Noakes took the vacant European lightweight title, going the distance for the first time in a dominant points win against Yvan Mendy on a Frank Warren-promoted card at York Hall on Saturday.
Noakes (14-0, 13 KOs) had never previously been past nine rounds as a professional, acquiring the British, Commonwealth titles and WBC International Silver belts on the way to building a perfect record. Mendy (48-7-1, 22 KOs) had previously served as European champion, and had only previously lost in good company.
Noakes was well on top through the first half of the fight, and then cranked up the pressure, troubling the Frenchman with an uppercut in the seventh.
The home favourite showed a variety of offence to body and head in the later rounds, but ‘The Lion’ held firm, and beckoned Noakes in to exchange in the final round, with the end result beyond doubt.
The 26-year-old was unable to find the finish, and heard the final bell for the very first time.
Three scores of 120-108 confirmed Noakes’ dominance, and a useful 12 rounds in the bank.
Junior stops Farias
Aloys Junior (7-1, 7 KOs) again impressed, scoring a fourth round stoppage win against Argentina’s Pablo Oscar Natalio Farias (32-7-1, 17 KOs) in their cruiserweight meeting.
Remaining Undercard
Andrew Cain (11-1, 10 KOs) rebounded from a first pro defeat last time out, as he knocked out Darwing Martinez (8-20-2, 6 KOs) with a right hand to the head in the fourth round of their bantamweight encounter.
Henry Turner (13-0, 5 KOs) defended his WBC International Silver super lightweight title with a fifth round stoppage of Maykol Mendoza (16-5, 14 KOs).
Remi Scholer (4-10, 1 KO) caused an upset, halting Jack Oliphant (1-1) in the fourth of their scheduled six rounder at middleweight.
