The ban on professional boxing in Norway has finally been lifted, and Norway’s undefeated queen of boxing, Cecilia Brækhus finally gets to fight on Norwegian soil. The big event is scheduled for October 1st 2016.
“Finally! I’m thrilled I finally get the opportunity to fight on Norwegian ground. This has been a major driving force in recent years” says Cecilia Brækhus.
“I would like to thank my wonderful partners – both the ones concerned with sports, and the ones that are making way in politics. Many people have worked hard for a long period of time to make this possible. We promise an unforgettable party for the Norwegian people.”
The event takes place in Oslo Spektrum Saturday October 1st. It will be a spectacular evening with several boxing matches, and Cecilia Brækhus will create Norwegian history when she enters the ring in the center of the capitol.
Pro boxing has been banned in Norway since 1981, and Cecilia Brækhus and other Norwegian pro boxers have been forced to practice their sport abroad. In 2015, Cecilia Brækhus submitted her first application for a boxing convention in Norway, but was rejected. After a long process, the application has finally been approved.
The incumbent government has actively worked to gain support for the required changes in the knock-out-law, where quarantine regulations, match length, age and a satisfactory system for anti-doping work has been central.
Cecilia Brækhus, known as The First Lady, is undefeated in her 28 fights as a professional boxer. She is the holder of the WBC, WBA, IBF and WBO titles, and the next time she defends her belts – she will be doing it in Oslo Spektrum – it is the ultimate homecoming. Opponent TBA.
