There’s been talk over the past few days that Amir Khan ditched his December fight with Devon Alexander, opting instead to move straight into a match against Floyd Mayweather in May 2014. Khan’s team has released an official statement denying these rumors, and stating that Khan is very much preparing to face Alexander… once an agreement can be reached, that is.
Official Statement:
Team Khan would like to dispel recent reports that Amir Khan has pulled out of a potential match-up against Devon Alexander on December 7th, taking up a fight against Floyd Mayweather in May of next year instead.
Contrary to this story, Amir Khan is currently in training camp in San Francisco with the aim of fighting again in December against Alexander once an agreement can be reached.
There’s a few interesting points here, beginning with the ending to their statement, “once an agreement can be reached.” Hmmm. But regardless, I don’t see how Khan is an even passable, let alone legitimate, opponent for Mayweather until and unless he defeats Alexander. He hasn’t built himself back up anywhere near that level at this point.
Additionally, Khan and his team just don’t learn their lesson. Every time he angles for a fight against Mayweather, Khan loses track of the opponent in front of him. He lost to Lamont Peterson, and was kayoed by Danny Garcia, as he fueled speculation that he was seeking a Mayweather fight after his impending victories. Whoops.
