After training hard for the last two months, San Diego, CA, based jr. welterweight Antonio Orozco (8-0, 5KOs) must grudgingly pull out of his scheduled six round semi-main event fight on November 18th due to a mild rib injury. The undefeated Orozco was scheduled to make his second appearance at Golden Boy Promotions’ “Fight Night Club” at the Nokia Live! in Los Angeles, CA, but instead must sit out until early next year.
“While sparring Freddy Hernandez this past weekend, I hurt my ribs,” Orozco stated. “It’s really disappointing so close to the fight.” Orozco discovered it was serious after more work with club mate Carlos Molina later that day and the pain not subsiding.
Orozco’s manager, Frank Espinoza of the famed Espinoza Boxing Club, decided that the best move was to cancel his pending bout. “Antonio is young and this injury is not going to slow down his career at all,” Espinoza, who also helms the careers of bantamweight Yhonny Perez and Abner Mares among other up and coming prospects, stated. “The ‘Fight Night Club’ series is a great platform to develop a fighter like Antonio. We hope to get another opportunity real soon.”
With the injury, Orozco expects to be out of the gym for at least three weeks. “As soon as I can move with out pain, I will go back to the gym,” Orozco said. “Once I am fully recuperated, I will go back to heavy training and sparring to get ready for a big 2011.”
