Motivated and ready to return home to Tepic, Mexico, on Saturday, May 19th, super bantamweight Oscar “Fantasma” Gonzalez (27-1, 24KOs) is in Tijuana, Mexico, preparing with his trainer Fernando Fernandez for his next challenge in the form of the experienced Giovanni “Ruso” Caro (23-10-4, 18KOs). The twelve round bout will be for Gonzalez’s WBC USNBC 122lbs. title and will be broadcast live in Mexico by Televisa’s “Sabados de Corona” boxing series. The fight card will be held at Tepic’s Monumental bull ring and presented by Erik Morales’ Box Latino along with Corona.
Gonzalez, who has not fought in his hometown of Tepic since defending his WBC Youth super bantamweight title versus Hugo Morales near the end of ’09, stated that his match up versus Caro, a fighter who has fought versus elite level competition, is an opportunity for him to reach a new stage in his career. “I am happy that the fight will be in Tepic. I feel even more motivated and I know that the fans will be satisfied because it is a good fight. A fight that is going to open up doors for my career. I feel good, I feel prepared. I am ready for anything and ready to face him.”
Concentrated in Tijuana since April and working out at the Jose “Olivaritos” Morales Gym located in the Zona Norte of the border city, Gonzalez mentioned that he knows what he needs to be careful of against his next opponent.
“I have to look out for his power,” González clearly said. “They say that he can hit hard and I have to be careful of his right hand, which is the only thing I have to look out for.”
Caro from Mexico City has faced a number of international rivals like American Chris Avalos and South African’s Takalani Ndlovu and Simpiwe Vetyeka. “El Ruso” has also owned the super bantamweight WBC International and FECARBOX titles.
Undefeated junior flyweight NABF champion Pedro “Pedrin” Guevara (17-0-1, 13KOs) will also be featured on the card as well as up and coming local fighters from Tepic.
