Pacquiao vs. Algieri Round by Round Coverage
Rd 1: Algieri spends the first three minutes on his toes, circling the ring, flicking out the jab occasionally. Pacquiao comes forward, throwing the greater variety. Neither have landed much in a feeling out round.
Rd 2: Algieri moving backwards at speed, Pacquiao chasing him at an equal pace. Algieri blocks a straight left before slipping on wetness. Referee gives a knockdown. Terrible decision. Pacquiao lands a straight right that causes redness on Algieri’s left eye.
Rd 3: Algieri plants his feet for the first time, halting the forward motion of Pacquiao. Algieri sneaks in a couple of straight right hands, but Pacquiao’s raids are still the more eye-catching.
Rd 4: Pacquiao lands a huge uppercut on the inside, he just does not respect Algieri’s power at all! This is the most aggressive Pacquiao has been in a while. Algieri’s sneaking in a few, but not enough to get a foothold in the fight.
Rd 5: Algieri lands a nice left hook after a lead right hand in his best round of the fight. Pacquiao is left swinging and missing as Algieri moves out of range.
Rd 6: Pacquiao lands a flush left hand, sending Algieri to the ropes. Visibly shocked, Algieri is bundled to the ground by a follow-up flurry. Pacquiao lands a straight right, Algieri slips on the same wetness as before and another knockdown is scored. Big round for Pacquiao!
Rd 7: Pacquiao is countering any time Algieri attempts to lead. Algieri just cannot keep Pacquiao off him, missing with most of his shots. Nonetheless, a better round for Algieri. Certainly less painful.
Rd 8: Nothing much happening here, Pacquiao continues to be the aggressor, Algieri not offering much in return.
Rd 9: Quiet round until a big straight left from Pacquiao nails Algieri and sends him sprawling to the canvas!!! Algieri did well to get up, but was put down again by the following attack. Somehow, thanks in part to yet more terrible officiating, Algieri makes it through the round.
Rd 10: Pacquiao takes his time, seemingly letting Algieri off the hook. As the round comes to a close, Pacquiao lands a cuffing blow, and Algieri goes down again. He’s showing plenty of heart, but no-one would complain if Algieri’s corner pulled him out now.
Rd 11. It’s pretty much one-way traffic now as Pacquiao looks to carve an opening out of a defensive Algieri, to little avail.
Rd 12. Pacquiao finishes as he started: aggressively. Algieri seems desperate to reach the final bell and, despite landing a couple of shots, he spends most of the last round ducking and diving. Pacquiao ends the round with an Ali shuffle. An easy win for the Filipino.
Official Result: Manny Pacquiao UD (119-103, 119-103, 120-102)
Undercard Results & Updates
COMPLETED: Zou Shiming vs. Kwanpichit OnesongchaiGym
Rd 1: Nice bodywork from Shiming in quiet opener.
Rd 2: Short right hand catches OnesongchaiGym on his way in, down he goes! The referee could have stopped the fight at the end of this round, very one sided stuff.
Rd 3: Shiming’s faster hands and feet keeping him a step ahead of an overmatched opponent.
Rd 4: Shiming with nice combinations and movement keeping his opponent off balance.
Rd 5: Shiming once again dominates his befuddled opponent, finishing with an Ali-esque shuffle.
Rd 6: OnesongchaiGym given one-point deduction for repeated low blows, then knocked (pushed?) down. Shiming landing easily but still not able to finish his opponent, this could bring questions about his power.
Rd 7: Shiming dancing around the ring, evading OnesongchaiGym’s wild swings.
Rd 8: Not sure what’s more impressive: OnesongchaiGym’s chin or his pokerface. An accidental headbutt temporarily halts the action. Shiming took a few stiff shots as he tried to finish his man, warning signs but nothing more.
Rd 9: Long-distance Shiming fights are going to be tedious if this is what they will consist of. He picks his man off well but he just doesn’t seem to have that finishing touch.
Rd 10: Shiming left eye swelling due to head clash. Added to that, he was taking shots himself having been told to get the knockout by trainer Roach.
Rd 11: Small repeat of the tenth as Shiming looks for ways to win within the distance, looks unlikely at this stage.
Rd 12: Shiming lands a big right hand then falls on top of OnesongchaiGym. The referee inexplicably calls another knockdown, much to Onesong’s bemusement. Shiming’s left eye is completely closed, but he’s won a serious mismatch here. 120-103 Shiming on this writer’s card.
Official Result: Shiming UD (119-106, 119-106, 120-103)
COMPLETED: Vasyl Lomachenko vs. Chonlatarn Piriyapinyo
Rd 1: Lomachenko bosses opener with sound boxing.
Rd 2: Another relatively simple round for Lomachenko.
Rd 3: Lomachenko spinning and moving well laterally. Piriyapinyo caught at the bell.
Rd 4: Piriyapinyo is game but perhaps needs saving from himself. He was embarrassed by Lomachenko’s angles, footwork and combinations in this round, being knocked down in the process.
Rd 5: Lomachenko continues to establish himself as the better man. Question is – how long will this last?
Rd 6: Piriyapinyo coming forward, showing willing but still struggling to land clean shots.
Rd 7: Lomachenko constantly moving, Piriyapinyo setting a high pace but struggling to connect.
Rd 8: Monotonous fight, Lomachenko continues to dominate.
Rd 9: Lomachenko wins, throwing almost exclusively with his right hand. He may have hurt his left.
Rd 10: You guessed it, Lomachenko wins again.
Rd 11: Lomachenko continues his dominance, it’s been an excellent and authoritative display.
Rd 12: Piryapinyo makes it to the final bell, which is a minor miracle. Now the perilous wait until the judges scorecards are announced. 120-107 Lomachenko on this writer’s card…
Official Result: Lomachenko UD (120-107, 120-107, 120-107)
COMPLETED: Jessie Vargas vs. Antonio DeMarco
Rd 1: Close Vargas round to begin the fight.
Rd 2: Vargas cut under left eye. DeMarco the aggressor.
Rd 3: Another close round, Vargas perhaps edges it, both landed decent shots.
Rd 4: Vargas recovers well from left hook which made him dip at the knees.
Rd 5: DeMarco eating big right hands. Vargas imposing himself on DeMarco.
Rd 6: Having been warned of a potential stoppage by trainer Freddie Roach, DeMarco failed to avert Vargas’ punches.
Rd 7: Really warming up here. DeMarco lands some stunning backhand uppercuts that seem to wobble Vargas temporarily, but Vargas comes back with volleys of his own.
Rd 8: Roach implores to DeMarco that “We need to win by knockout…stay on him!”. Unfortunately it is DeMarco who is on the receiving end of a punishing round. Vargas isn’t elusive now either, but is landing at will.
Rd 9: Vargas showboats, but DeMarco makes him pay! This fight seems one punch away from the end, but both taking shots well! Vargas landing cleaner blows but DeMarco’s shots are thudding. Vargas finishes well with big hooks from both hands, but DeMarco is relentless, nice fight!
Rd 10: Ripping uppercut hurts Vargas! After a brief stumble, Vargas comes back with a right to the body, bellowed on by his trainer, Roy Jones Jr.
Rd 11: Both men are sporting the marks of a gruelling fight. Vargas boxing more defensively now, and lands a big overhand right on a static DeMarco! Vargas smiles at DeMarco, he knows he’s not far away from a points win.
Rd 12: Vargas boxes very well to seal the deal. A very tough skirmish, well done to both men for their performances. 116-112 Vargas, in this writer’s opinion.
Official Result: Vargas UD (116-112, 116-112, 116-112)
