24/7 Pacquiao-Marquez Episode 3

On HBO Saturday night, 24/7 Manny Pacquiao vs. Juan Manuel Marquez episode 3 premiered. On the night of its debut, the big fourth fight between these two stars was just a week away. In live action, the Miguel Cotto vs. Austin Trout fight took center stage for boxing fans this weekend, so if you missed the episode, find the complete Pacquiao vs. Marquez 24 7 episode 3 recap right here.

As usual, we get started with the Pacquiao-Marquez 24/7 episode with a recap of what previously happened. We see a quick rewind to the press tour, and the time off for each man before they got started with their intensive training camps.

Now Pacquiao has arrived in L.A. and is at the Wild Card Gym. He arrives 6 weeks before fight night, and he arrived in shape, with Freddie Roach is happy about (and which isn’t always the case, apparently).

With Roach worried about Pacquiao’s performance dropping off, he’s trying to change things up. He’s always given the sparring partners the famous $1,000 bonus for knocking down Pacquiao. Well, now he’s giving Pacquiao a bonus for knocking down his sparring partners. He wants Pacquiao to be pressing, and to regain that killer instinct he used to have.

Pacquiao sends his man down, and Roach tries to give him some cash. Pacquiao is reluctant to accept it, as he says it’s his job, and as he also doesn’t gamble anymore. Roach is happy about that, but Pacquiao does end up taking the money.

Roach ends up talking about how he misses the days when he was the boss. As now, Pacquiao basically tells him what to do instead of vice-versa.

Now we’re back with Team Marquez in Mexico, and he’s been in camp since mid-October. But beyond that, they’ve been planning for this fight since the last fight ended. They’re trying new things and they’ve been pressing very hard.

Trainer Nacho Beristain talks about improving accuracy and speed, and how Marquez has been lacking that explosive speed. Of course, that doesn’t help the steroids rumors which have been quite prevalent these days, especially as Marquez has been looking jacked. Now, the team has decided that their sparring sessions are absolutely closed in terms of cameras, to keep the other side from getting any additional insight.

Marquez leaves the gym, and goes to receive “cupping therapy”. Suction cups are applied to his back with a system that is supposed to induce recovery and healing. Looks like some very odd stuff — but I guess that’s better than drinking your own piss, or taking steroids for that matter.

We get to see Pacquiao behind the scenes preparing for his 7th appearance on Jimmy Kimmel. As we always say, the Pacquiao and Kimmel interviews are fantastic, and this rendition was great too. You have to say the premiere of Pacquiao vs. Guillermo Rodriguez 24/7. After the show, a party ensues at the Pacquiao residence, with dart and chess tournaments.

Back to Mexico City, and it’s 4 am when Marquez gets to work at the Olympic training center. They’re working on plyometrics and all kinds of new training techniques. Of course, the trainer he works with comes with controversy. He’s been previously linked to performance enhancing drug scandals with prominent Olympic athletes. He and Marquez both talk about it and how they’re on the up and up.

We’re with Freddie Roach now, and see him get into his ridiculous car to drive to the gym in the morning. We hear a bit about his past and his journey that took him to where he is today. It’s been a tough year for Roach, as Chavez Jr. lost to Sergio Martinez, and Amir Khan basically fired him. It’s not the hot streak he’s been used to. So this is a big upcoming fight for him personally as well. For Roach, he says this will justify everything. Pacquiao says he won’t let him down.

And since we’ve looked at Roach, now we move to life with Nacho. The cigars are gone after a health scare, and he uses a breathing machine or tool of some sort as he watches and analyzes fights. He had been diagnoses with pneumonia, but he’s not slowing down. He remarks about how Juan has been with him since he was 12 years old.  They have great respect for each other in the sport and out of the sport as people.

Just as Beristain is still pushing, everyone in this saga is still pushing. Still working for the latest accomplishment, statement, victory. Both sides are basically out to set the story straight and to shut the other side up. They’re fed up with the other guys, and it’s all on the line.
