Boxing fans eagerly waiting for the Manny Pacquiao vs. Floyd Mayweather superfight are in luck. Pacquiao vs. Mayweather is all set to go off as planned, finally… in court. The news came in earlier today that Pacquiao’s lawsuit against Mayweather would be allowed to continue on, as opposed to being dismissed. The lawsuit dates back to 2009 when Mayweather made comments publicly suggesting that Pacquiao had been using performance enhancing drugs.
According to the ruling, there is sufficient evidence for Pacquiao and his team to continue pursuing the suit and moving ahead with that in court, and that all of the suit’s claims rest on legitimate and firm allegations.
For Mayweather, this means his busy legal docket only continues to get more complicated. He’s due in court for several different incidents, most notably of which, the one involving his former girlfriend and their children where he faces eight different counts and could serve 34 years in prison if convicted on all of them.
It’s not only Mayweather that is named in the suit however. Mayweather, his father Floyd Mayweather Sr. and his uncle Roger Mayweather, as well as Oscar De La Hoya and Richard Schaefer of Golden Boy are all included as well. Mayweather’s attorney says that they will continue to fight for dismissal of the case, and that since the standard for proving malice in a case like this is so high, he does not believe that Pacquiao’s side will be able to be successful.
Whatever happens, this is the only Pacquiao vs. Mayweather battle that anyone is going to see anytime soon. It’s also just one of many legal proceedings that Mayweather is dealing with, complicating his future greatly, and is another major dispute between Golden Boy and Top Rank, both of whom now have more fuel to add to their fires with the controversy swirling around the signing of Nonito Donaire.
