Pathway to Glory results; 10 USA men advance to Olympic trials

The Pathway to Glory Olympic Trials Qualifier II for Men concluded on Saturday with 10 championship bouts at the Holiday Inn Philadelphia Stadium. All 20 of the day’s competitors officially clinched Olympic Trials berths by advancing to championship night, but the boxers still wanted to win gold medals in the event.

It was a good night for the host city with two Philadelphia boxers winning gold medals in the light welterweight and welterweight divisions. 2015 National Golden Gloves champion Jaron Ennis (Philadelphia, Pa.) won his second national title in five months with a victory in the light welterweight championship bout. He took a 3-0 decision over Jamaine Ortiz Rodriguez (Worcester, Mass.) to take the gold medal.

Paul Kroll (Philadelphia, Pa.) won the battle of the City of Brotherly Love versus fellow Philadelphia native Mark Dawson (Philadelphia, Pa.) in the welterweight division. He took a 2-1 decision over Dawson to win the welterweight championship.

Two New Jersey natives took gold in two of the first three bouts, led by two-time USA Boxing national champion Leroy Davila (Princeton, N.J.). Davila returned to the national scene with a 3-0 victory over Adrian Servin (Phoenix, Ariz.) in the light flyweight finale.

Junior and youth world champion Shakur Stevenson (Newark, N.J.) won his first elite division championship on Saturday with a 3-0 victory over Mikail Montgomery (Macon, Ga.) in bantamweight final round competition.

Texas and California also won two gold medals a piece at the Olympic Trials Qualifier II in Philadelphia. Jay Crenshaw (Houston, Texas) defeated 2014 National Golden Gloves titlist Christian Carto (Deptford, N.J.) by unanimous decision in the flyweight championship bout. In heavyweight action, 2014 WSB and World Championship Team Trial silver medalist Adrian Taylor (Mesquite, Texas) moved in to the gold medal position with a 2-1 victory over Hakim Lopez (Lithonia, Ga.).

Lightweight Israel Mercado (Montclair, Calif.) won the first title of the night for his home state with a 2-1 victory over Elijah Pierce (Oklahoma City, Okla.) before light heavyweight Jonathan Esquivel (Anaheim, Calif.) claimed his gold medal with a unanimous decision over Elvis Figueroa (New Haven, Conn.).

Two-time middleweight national champion Leshawn Rodriquez (Medford, N.Y) added another gold medal to his collection with a 3-0 decision over Trevor Lattimore (Bridgeport, Conn.) in their final round contest.

Super heavyweight Alante Green (Cleveland, Ohio) won the final title of the night with a 2-1 victory over Manase Raidadroka (Inglewood, Calif.).

The final qualifying event for the Olympic Trials for Men’s Boxing will be October 26-31 in Memphis, Tenn., and the location and dates for the Olympic Trials are currently being finalized and will be announced when confirmed.

Previous Results

One night after the elite women concluded Olympic Trials qualifying, it was the men’s turn. Twenty elite men officially qualified for the Olympic Trials for Men’s Boxing on Friday in semifinal action at the Pathway to Glory Olympic Trials Qualifier II for Men in Philadelphia. The women concluded competition at their Olympic Trials Qualifier in Baltimore with championship matches and consolation bouts on the final day of the event.

Light flyweights Adrian Servin (Phoenix, Ariz.) and two-time national champion Leroy Davila (Princeton, N.J.) clinched the first berths of the night in their semifinal bouts. Servin won a third round TKO over Angel Rosa (West Haven, Conn.) and Davila took a unanimous decision over Slade Corvin (Chattanooga, Tenn.) to advance to the Olympic Trials.

In the flyweight division, Jay Crenshaw (Houston, Texas) pulled out a 2-1 decision over 2012 Olympic Trials champion Eros Correa (San Jose, Calif.) to move on to his first Olympic Trials. 2014 National Golden Gloves champion Christian Carto (Deptford, N.J.) joined Crenshaw on the qualified list with a 3-0 decision over Khalid Twaiti (Brooklyn, N.Y.).

Junior and World Champion and Youth Olympic gold medalist Shakur Stevenson (Newark, N.J.) earned his berth in the Olympic Trials with a 3-0 win over Cristian Williams (Chicago, Ill.). Stevenson will face off with Mikhail Montgomery (Macon, Ga.) in the bantamweight championship bout. Montgomery moved on with a 3-0 decision over Rudy Garcia (Los Angeles, Calif.).

Lightweights Israel Mercado (Montclair, Calif.) and Elijah Pierce (Oklahoma City, Okla.) punched their tickets for the Olympic Trials with unanimous decision wins over Martino Jules (Allentown, Pa.) and Rolando Romero (Las Vegas, Nev.) respectively.

Hometown boxer and 2015 National Golden Gloves champion Jaron Ennis (Philadelphia, Pa.) had the crowd on their feet during his bout with 2014 USA Boxing National Champion Abraham Nova (Albany, N.Y.). Ennis won a 3-0 decision to move on to the championship bout where he will face Jamaine Ortiz-Rodriguez (Worcester, Mass.).

Two Philadelphia boxers will face off in the welterweight division final round contest on Saturday following victories from 2015 USA Boxing youth national champion Mark Dawson (Philadelphia, Pa.) and Paul Kroll (Philadelphia, Pa.) in tonight’s semifinal action. Dawson defeated Daquan Johnson (Clementon, N.J.) while Kroll won a 3-0 decision over Javaune James (Miramar, Fla.).

Two-time middleweight national champion Leshawn Rodriquez (Medford, N.Y.) finally qualified his Olympic Trials berth on Friday with a 3-0 decision over Omar Murillo (Boardman, Ore.). Trevor Lattimore (Bridgeport, Conn.) joined him in the championship round with a 2-1 win over Moses Tyalor (Detroit, Mich.) on Friday night.

Boxers from the two coasts will battle in the light heavyweight championship contest. Jonathan Esquivel (Anaheim, Calif.) earned a unanimous decision over Richard Rivera (Hartford, Conn.) to move on to a match-up with Elvis Figueroa (New Haven, Conn.)

2014 WSB and World Championship Team Trial silver medalist qualified his Olympic Trials berth with a 3-0 victory over Alvin Davie (Miami, Fla.). He will challenge Hakim Lopez (Lithonia, Ga.) in tomorrow’s finals.

Manase Raikadroka (Inglewood, Calif.) and Alante Green (Cleveland, Ohio) claimed the final two spots with wins in the super heavyweight division.

The women’s event in Baltimore concluded with six bouts at the Baltimore Harbor Hotel on Friday. Three women claimed the last three Olympic Trials berths while another three ladies took gold in the championship bouts.

Hometown boxer Franchon Crews (Baltimore, Md.) enjoyed an outstanding week of boxing on her home turf and she closed the event with a 3-0 win over Iesha Kenney (Alexandria, Va.) to not only win gold but also the Outstanding Boxer award.

2012 World Champion Tiara Brown (Fort Myers, Fla.) concluded her run through the tournament with a 2-1 win over Samantha Kinchen (Lexington, Ky.) in the lightweight division.

Jamie Mitchell (Las Vegas, Nev.) took gold in the flyweight division with a 3-0 win over Giovanna Camacho (Colorado Springs, Colo.).

Flyweight Melanie Costa (Norton, Mass.), lightweight Amelia Moore (Millersville, Md.) and middleweight Cierra Taylor (Rochester, N.Y.) all won their consolation bouts to move on to the Olympic Trials for Women’s Boxing and officially conclude qualifying for the Olympic Trials for Women’s Boxing.

The men’s event will conclude with 10 championship bouts at 4 p.m. on Friday at the Holiday Inn Philadelphia Stadium.

Six women secured Olympic Trials berths tonight at the Pathway to Glory Olympic Trials Qualifier II in Baltimore, Md., on Thursday night. Up the road in Philadelphia, 38 elite men moved one win closer to their own spots with quarterfinal victories at the Holiday Inn Philadelphia Stadium.

2012 World Champion Tiara Brown (Fort Myers, Fla.) punched her ticket for her second straight Olympic Trials with a unanimous decision victory over hometown boxer Amelia Moore (Millersville, Md.) in the lightweight division at the Baltimore Harbor Hotel.

A second two-time World Championships medalist claimed her Olympic Trials spot with a convincing victory in the middleweight division. Franchon Crews (Baltimore, Md.) left no doubt in her bout, winning a fourth round TKO over 2014 Youth Olympian Martha Fabela (Oakland, Calif.) in their semifinal bout.

Two former youth titlists advanced to their first Olympic Trials with unanimous decision victories on Thursday night. Samantha Kinchen (Lexington, Ky.) is boxing in her first elite tournament at the lightweight division and she is enjoying her new weight class. Kinchen won a 3-0 decision over Mioshia Wagoner (Lawrence, Kansas) to clinch her Olympic Trials berth. In the middleweight division, 2015 Youth World Championships medalist Iesha Kenney (Alexandria, Va.) took the final win of the night with a 3-0 win over Cierra Taylor.

Jamie Mitchell (Las Vegas, Nev.) and Giovanna Camacho (Colorado Springs, Colo.) earned the two victories in the flyweight division.

Olympic Trials Qualifier II for Women competition will conclude with final round and consolation bouts on Friday at 8 p.m. at the Baltimore Harbor Hotel.

In men’s action, two-time light flyweight national champion Leroy Davila (Princeton, N.J.) made a triumphant return from shoulder surgery with a 3-0 victory over Xenon Mallari (Las Vegas, Nev.) in his first bout of the tournament.

2014 National Champion Christian Carto (Deptford, N.J.) competed close to home in his flyweight contest with Timothy Longoria (Palacios, Texas). Carto advanced to the semifinals with a 3-0 victory in their quarterfinal bout.

2014 light welterweight national champion Abraham Nova (Albany, N.Y.) earned his semifinal spot with a 3-0 win over Pennsylvania native Nahin Albright (Yeadon, Pa.) in their match-up on Thursday.

Age and experience won out in the middleweight match-up between two-time elite national champion Leshawn Rodriquez (Medford, N.Y.) and two-time youth titlist Charles Conwell (Cleveland, Ohio). Rodriquez pulled out a 2-1 decision over Conwell to move on to the semifinals.

2015 USA Boxing National Championships bronze medalist Elvis Garcia (Tacoma, Wash.) returned to the semifinals at another key national event with a 2-1 win over hometown boxer Benjamin Sinakin (Philadelphia, Pa.).

Olympic Trials Qualifier for Men II action moves in to all-important semifinal competition at 6 p.m. on Friday at the Holiday Inn Philadelphia Stadium. All of Friday’s victors will earn spots in the Olympic Trials for Men’s Boxing.
