Miguel Cotto was formally received in his hometown after completing the historic feat last Saturday in which thrashed Argentina’s Sergio ‘Maravilla’ Martinez at Madison Square Garden to become the first Puerto Rican to reach world titles in four divisions.
Cotto was honored, and spoke to an audience of fans and supporters with his title belts on display.
Cotto was received by the Mayor of the city William Miranda Torres, as well as by members of the press and a large group of fans who gathered at City Hall William Miranda Marin.
“There have been many years of sacrifice” was the first thing he said when Cotto addressed the audience.
Then he had an emotional moment when he spoke words of thanks to his mother, his children, his wife and family to talk about the support they always received from his father, who died recently.
“I know my family is proud of me, but I will not rest until they feel more proud,” said four-time divisional champion. “I’ve been blessed. The maturity that one acquires over the years makes you understand that there is nothing better than family. My family is what drives me, is what motivates me, “he said through tears middleweight champion.
Cotto said the success in his career due to perseverance, effort, dedication and discipline that has always shown during training.
“Hard work conquers all as evidenced last Saturday. This is the biggest win of my career, “said the Puerto Rican. “We will continue working in the same or better way to continue giving joy last Saturday as the people of Puerto Rico,” Cotto said.
The Puerto Rican also thanked the legendary trainer Freddie Roach.
“Freddie is a person to admire. I have had very good chemistry with him. The grade for him and for the team’s Wild Card Gym A+”, “said Cotto.
During the press conference, Cotto also received recognition from the Senate and House of Representatives of Puerto Rico.
