Caleb Plant has revealed that Canelo Alvarez is more powerful than rival David Benavidez.

Plant has faced both men, stopped by Canelo in a bid for the undisputed super middleweight championship in 2021 and beaten on the cards by Benavidez last March.

A Canelo-Benavidez fight is one of the most sought-after match-ups in the sport, but Alvarez, who defends his unified super middleweight titles against Edgar Berlanga on September 14 in Las Vegas, has shown little interest in a showdown.

The Mexican’s lack of enthusiasm has prompted Benavidez to move up to light heavyweight and he is now looking to secure a meeting with the winner of the undisputed clash between Artur Beterbiev and Dmitry Bivol on October 12.

Plant returns to action for the first time since defeat to ‘The Mexican Monster’ when he faces Trevor McCumby on the Canelo-Berlanga undercard and has named Alvarez as the bigger puncher.

“I think Canelo he hits harder for one punch,” the 32-year-old told Fight Hub TV.

“He hits harder than David.

“But you know David puts them together quite a bit better than, not just Canelo, but most people in boxing, you know.

“So, David can really put his hands together.

“Both have their pros and cons.

“Both have underrated defence.

“They’re sharp. They’re both great fighters.

“There’s a difference in styles, but they are both great at what they do.”

Benavidez, 27, secured his first win at 175lbs, overcoming Oleksandr Gvozdyk by unanimous decision in June, although is sidelined until December with a hand injury picked up in the fight.

Alvarez previously named an asking price of $150-$200m to face the Arizona native.

Should he prevail against Berlanga, his future plans look unclear, having rejected an approach from Saudi Arabia boxing boss, Turki Alalshikh to discuss a clash with WBA super welterweight champion, Terence Crawford.
