In Central Florida’s Hotbed of Boxing, A New Champion Fights Forward:
“Life is more relaxed here,” so declares a small whistle-stop town in central Florida known as Bowling Green. Named by settler’s from Kentucky long ago, the same southern charm still exists here today. Being only one square mile in size, everyone knows each other. Thus life probably would seem relaxed as the motto suggests. But a local boxer is not “taking it easy” by any means.
Bowling Green’s own 22 year old Daniel “El Alacran” Lozano is a professional boxer who holds the WBC-USBNC Flyweight Title. He is undefeated having 10 wins, 7 of these by knock-out. Being a staple in both his hometown and Tampa Bay’s boxing scene, he’s a dynamic fighter to watch and is clearly on the rise.
With a true love for the sport since childhood and plenty of hometown fans, Lozano had support long before the pros. His storied amateur career had over 100 bouts and included wins at the U.S. Nationals, Golden Gloves, and Olympic trials.
Disciplined to say the least, a day in the life of Lozano starts hours before dawn and includes hardcore training, working a full-time day job, giving local younger fans autographs with a side of motivational advice, pushing a few cars around a junkyard, running several miles for some “downtime,” and (maybe) washing dishes for his wife after dinner. This doesn’t seem like a relaxed way to live for most, especially for those in sleepy Bowling Green. But for Lozano, it’s life.
One of the fastest rising boxers in the southern circuit, this is a sly fighter who’s rather quick on the take. His nickname, “El Alacran” means “The Scorpion.” Similar to a sting that a scorpion inflicts, Lozano has a power punch of his own that most if not all of mankind should avoid.
In Tampa last September he fought for the vacant WBC-USNBC flyweight title. Facing Jonathan Arias, a more experienced opponent who’s also taller in stature, Lozano quickly took control. Catching Arias in the ropes, he fired off power shots in a fashion similar to that of an AK-47. Soon thereafter he closed the deal with a left overhand power hit, thereby winning in the second round at the 1 minute 9 second mark. Being his first professional title win, many say it’s merely a start for Lozano.
Come February 10th at Tampa Bay’s grand A La Carte Pavilion, fight fan masses will watch “El Alcaran” put his spotless record on the line in a non-title bout facing Manuel Huata Galavin (5-7-2KO) from Nacozari Sonora, Mexico. Galvin won his most recent fight in Mexico against Rogelio Armenta by TKO in the first round. Others will battle on the night’s pumped up fight card.
