Fight fans were treated to two great fights on Saturday evening as part of HBO’s doubleheader from Atlantic City, headlined by Adrien Broner vs. Antonio DeMarco and co-featured by Seth Mitchell vs. Johnathon Banks. Broner vs. DeMarco Results
Adrien Broner made a sensational debut in the lightweight division ranks, making easy work of respected titleholder Antonio DeMarco. Broner scored an 8th round TKO victory after dominating the entire affair, and generally laying a beat down on the game but overmatched champion.
Broner simply was too fast, strong and skilled for DeMarco, who continued to try to wade forward through the onslaught but wasn’t able to match the output he was faced with. His face was bruised and battered from the first round on, and despite a few strong moments, he was clearly on the worse end of the action throughout the evening.
With the fight continuing to meander on despite Broner’s edge, Broner landed a brutal combination in the 8th, highlighted by several crushing body blows. The punches sent DeMarco to the canvas, and the referee wisely jumped in to halt the action. Broner picks up the WBC 135 lbs strap in the process and is now a two-division titleholder.
Mitchell vs. Banks Results
Somewhere, Emanuel Steward is smiling. In a massive upset, Steward and Kronk protege turned head trainer of Wladimir Klitschko, Johnathon Banks, upset the undefeated heavyweight champion to be Seth Mitchell, testing his chin and making short work of him in the ring.
Banks got to him in the 2nd round, and after getting his man hurt, wouldn’t let up. He sent Mitchell crashing to the canvas three times in the second, ultimately leading to the referee calling off the action in this astonishing fight.
There are more than a few folks out there who feel as if Banks had a helping hand in this outcome.
Either way, a miraculous win, and a devastating outcome for the career of Seth Mitchell.
