Jacobs vs. Quillin Results in the Battle for Brooklyn:
And just like that, it was over. Daniel Jacobs scored a Round 1 TKO victory over the previously unbeaten Peter Quillin on Saturday night in the main event of a Showtime card from the Barclays Center in Brooklyn.Jacobs nailed Quillin with a flush straight right hand shut that got everything started. Quillin wobbled and buckled and almost went down, and Jacobs immediately began winging heavy power shots and forcing the action.
The immediate thought was that Quillin would survive the flurries, and Jacobs would likely pay for it later, having gassed himself out needlessly early. However, Quillin never effectively held on, nor did he keep his distance. Jacobs kept on throwing, and enough of those shots were getting through that more damage was being done.
Another big blow landed, and Quillin began reeling backwards. He stumbled and braced himself on the ropes before stumbling some more. Instead of going down, he tried to reengage in the fight. The referee didn’t like the look of his glazed eyes and uneven stance, and called off the action.
The stoppage might be questioned by some as being early, but Quillin didn’t complain about it, and the replays showed how badly Quillin was hurt.
To his credit, after the fight, Jacobs said if he was the referee he likely would have let Quillin continue. The two fighters expressed mutual admiration for each other and their longstanding history together, and Jacobs said he would be willing to do a rematch if that’s what his team and the people wanted. And to Quillin’s credit, he didn’t offer up any excuses and more went with the line of, well, that’s what happens in this sport sometimes.
Regardless of how you projected this fight to go, nobody thought it would be Jacobs TKO1 Quillin. Huge win for Jacobs, opening up a realm of possibilities for him, and obviously a disappointing setback for Quillin.
