Two of Top Rank’s stars for the future won big on Friday night, in televised action on truTV’s Friday night series from the State Farm Arena in Hidalgo, Texas. Here, find the full results from the card along with photos of the action.
In the main event, the unbeaten Ramirez dominated veteran Derek Edwards. He swept every round on all the judges’ scorecards, and by the end of the fight, had really busted Edwards up pretty badly. He came close to the stoppage at the end of Round 4, but Edwards was saved by a fortuitous bell. After that, there appeared to have been some good opportunities for Edwards’ team, including trainer Jeff Mayweather, or the referee, to pull the plug, but they let him make it to the end of the evening.
In the co-feature, Magdaleno defeated Jose Gonzalez via a 7th round TKO. The circumstances were a bit bizarre, with Gonzalez going down to the canvas and being given five minutes to recover with what was deemed a low blow. Gonzalez clearly preferred to not get back to his feet again, and eventually the fight was waved off. For Magdaleno, it’s his fifth straight victory since his lone career setback to Roman Martinez, via split decision, two years ago. He seems primed for big things in a wide open lightweight division.
