At a Navy war club room normally reserved for military brass in the Dominican Republic, the room was elbow to elbow filled with boxing’s most important executives and largely respected officials from around the world, as Sampson Lewkowicz was bestowed the honor of International Boxing Promoter by Franklin Nuñez of the National (Boxing) Commission of the Dominican Republic. Those additionally present at the prestigious ceremony were: former World Champion – Leo Cruz, Leocadio Mañon, Alcibiades Gonzalez, and the Dominican Republic Athletic Assessor of the President – Ramon Peña y Paulino Perez.
In accepting the award, Sampson had this to say: “I humbly accept and thank the National (Boxing) Commission of the Dominican Republic for being recognized and further appreciate the gesture. I view the Dominican Republic as my second home & country for which I have a great admiration of.”
In a statement on behalf of the National Commission of the Dominican Republic, Franklin Nuñez said: “ Lewkowicz has been one of the greatest ally’s in which the Dominican sport of boxing has been able to count on to be the example for a myriad of boxers’ career successes on an International level and we thank him for his efforts as Promoter from Uruguay. I would also add that Sampson has contributed efforts to bring interesting seminars to Dominican Republic Judges & Referees in a deliberate action to contribute to the continued development of our sport. In addition, he has been the catalyst in propelling the careers of many of boxing sons of the Dominican Republic. It is for this reason that we humbly, but in a very significant gesture to recognize the efforts of our friend, Sampson Lewkowicz.”
