Rumors have surfaced that Sergio Mora will take on Jesus Gonzales in a middleweight fight on April 19. The fight could be held at the US Airways Center in Phoenix, as “El Martillo” Gonzales has a strong local following in the community.
The report comes from Arizona-based boxing correspondent Don Smith.Janks Trotter, Isiah McFadden, Eddie Brooks, Paul Romero and highly regarded Mario Esparza are expected to be on the card.
Mora is just 2-3-1 over his last six fights, including two losses to Brian Vera, one to the late Vernon Forrest, and a draw against Shane Mosley.
Gonzales, who has recently been campaigning at super middleweight, would be dropping back down to 160 lbs for the bout. He’s coming off a crushing first round knockout loss to Adonis Stevenson, the second loss of his career, both of which have come via knockout. He had been on a 10 fight winning streak prior to that bout.
Mora vs. Gonzales would be a competitive crossroads fight, with the winner working himself back into the lower rungs of contention, but the loser being in a real tough spot.
