Dalton Smith moved a step closer to a shot at the WBC super lightweight title, as he dominated Mathieu Germain for a wide points win in their meeting in Sheffield.
Smith (18-0, 13 KOs) took the vacant European belt in his most recent outing, dropping Walid Ouizza twice on the way to a stunning stoppage win in January, while Germain (26-3-1, 11 KOs) was also last seen in January, halting Carlos Daniel Aquino in seven rounds in Montreal.
After a patient start, Smith then opened up, with a counter left hook putting the visitor on the deck in the second but Germain survived the round.
An uppercut got the Canadian’s attention in round three, and Smith landed a right hand that hurt Germain, who was wobbled and nearly decked by a right hand. Germain was using movement to stay out of trouble, and he did land a decent left hand in the fifth, but Smith was bossing the action, landing well to the body.
Smith connected with a nice body shot in the eighth that made Germain wince, and Smith remained patient, finding a double jab and a right hand in the penultimate frame that had Germain on the canvas for a second time.

Again Germain survived, but he was over again in the final frame from a couple of body shots as the home fighter put the exclamation mark on another impressive performance. Germain admirably made it to the final bell, where the result was inevitable.
Smith ran out a winner by two scores of 119-105, and a third at 117-107.
