The pride of Paramount, California, Charles Huerta (16-2, 9 KO’s) is looking to bounce back from a razor-thin split decision loss to unbeaten Raul Hirales Jr. on January 28. The 24-year-old Huerta has won five of his last six bouts and is determined to prove he is ready for the next step in his career. In his fourth year as a professional, Huerta is getting a shot at Martin, a world-ranked contender that will be a tough test, but one Huerta has looked forward to for years.
One of Southern California’s best-kept secrets, 24-year-old San Diego native Christopher Martin (21-0-2, 6 KO’s) let the cat out of the bag in 2010, reeling off five wins in impressive fashion. Most importantly, he defeated previously unbeaten Chris Avalos on national television and followed that with victories over Jose Luis Araiza and Yogli Herrera. Now ranked in the top ten by the WBC and IBF, Martin begins his march towards a title shot on May 20.
A former amateur star whose aggressive style is tailor-made for the professional game, 21-year-old Ronny Rios (13-0, 6 KO’s) began to make his way to the next level in 2010, as he pounded out five wins against hard-nosed opponents, including Leivi Brea and Adolfo Landeros. On May 20, he makes his first start of 2011, eager to show the improvements he’s made since the last time he stepped between the ropes.
