The long rumored Adonis Stevenson vs. Tavoris Cloud fight for “Superman” Stevenson’s WBC Light Heavyweight strap has been made official for September 28. The fight will take place at the Bell Centre in Montreal, Canada, and will be televised live on HBO.
Stevenson vs. Cloud has been in the works for quite some time now, however, the two sides weren’t able to make an agreement. Now the details are set and everything is in place. Additionally, the winner of the fight will be contractually obligated to face Tony Bellew next.
ProBoxing-Fans.com ranks Stevenson #2 and Cloud #8 at 175 lbs
Stevenson is coming off his highlight reel knockout victory over Chad Dawson, and will be making the first defense of the WBC strap he picked up in that fight.
Cloud, of course, is the former IBF titleholder at lightweight. After winning a controversial decision over Gabriel Campillo to retain his title, he then lost the belt against Bernard Hopkins, as Hopkins broke his own record as the oldest champion in boxing history. Cloud originally won the vacant IBF belt with a win over a faded Clinton Woods.
It’s an intriguing and competitive fight, and one wonders how the styles of these two fighters will clash. Both of these guys are physical specimens, with Stevenson being the more explosive athlete, but Cloud also being quite strong, tough and durable.
Bellew is in the wings and will be watching to see how this one plays out. With Hopkins facing Karo Murat in the fall, and Sergey Kovalev challenging Nathan Cleverly this weekend, these bouts will add some great action and excitement to the division over the coming months.
