Sturm Defends Title Against Hearns Tomorrow in Germany

Sturm vs. Hearns Shown on ESPN3.com at 3:30 PM Eastern:

On Saturday night in Stuttgart, Germany, one of the most famous names in middleweight history will go for gold when Ronald Hearns, the son of famed of former two-time middleweight champion Tommy “The Hitman” Hearns, battles Felix Sturm for the WBA middleweight Super Championship.

“The one thing that was not lost from generation to generation was the devastating right hand,” said Lou DiBella, the President of DiBella Entertainment, Hearns’s promoter. “I believe that once Ronald lands that right hand, we will be crowning a new WBA champion.”

Fight fans in the United States are in luck, as the bout will be televised live on ESPN3.com. The telecast is scheduled to begin at 3:30 PM ET.

Of course Hearns, with 20 KOs in 26 wins, has fought mostly subpar opposition in his career, and also has suffered a knockout loss, back in 2009 to Harry Joe Yorgey. Sturm on the other hand hasn’t lost in four and a half years, and is 9-1 in his last 10 fights, 9 of which were fights for the WBA middleweight title.

Every single one of those bouts, as is this one, was held in Germany, a trend Sturm hasn’t wanted to change since being on the wrong end of a bad decision against Oscar De La Hoya way back in 2004. That loss, one of two in his 34 (14) 2 – 1 career, was also only one of two times he has fought outside of Germany as a professional. The other was a bout in Croatia in 2005.
