Exactly one month ago today, we highlighted several boxing betting underdogs in big fights, and told you about the sports betting odds for them and why you may want to side with the underdog. The three underdogs were Juan Manuel Marquez against Manny Pacquiao, Austin Trout against Miguel Cotto, and Vyacheslav Senchenko against Ricky Hatton. Well, guess what? All three of those guys won their respective fights, and if you had put wagers on each of them, you’d be sitting pretty right now.
Let’s take a look at a few numbers which would show where you’d be today if you bet on those three fighters, starting with $100 and continue wagering with your winnings from each fight.
So, Hatton vs. Senchenko was first, and Senchenko was a +275 underdog. If you had bet $100 on him, you’d win $275, and end up with $375.
Now you would have had $375 to bet on Austin Trout defeating Miguel Cotto, at +215. You would win (for the sake of round numbers) about $805, added onto your original $375, giving you $1,180 after two quick underdog bets.
Pacquiao vs. Marquez was third in that list, and we all know how that played out, with Marquez’s vicious knockout win which shook up the entire world of boxing. If you bet all of your $1,180 on Marquez when he was still going off as a +275 underdog, you would have won another $3,245, giving you $4,425 total.
Three underdogs, three fights and three bets, and you would have turned your $100 into $4,400! That’s not a bad return, is it?
Of course, it’s not always that easy, and underdogs are underdogs for a reason. But when you see opportunities, particularly with big name fighters with a strong fan base going up against lesser known guys who are legit challenges, you may want to pounce and take advantage of those favorable conditions.
I wish I had taken my own advice. I could have used an extra $4,400 this holiday season!
