Almost one year ago to the day, the Bronx’s famous Moris Park Boxing Club, suffered a devastating fire that completely destroyed the entire gym and left nearly 100 Bronx youths without a place to train. Thankfully, after a lot of hard work, and some generous donations from Joe DeGuardia, CEO of Star Boxing, and a significant donation of equipment made by Everlast, the gym has re-opened and is busier than ever, with many of the amateur fighters from the gym now gearing up for the 2011 NY Golden Gloves.
On Monday, December 20th at 4PM the gym, along with building owner Joe DeGuardia, gym operator Dex Pejcinovic and a team from Everlast, will host the official grand re-opening/holiday party at the gym. There will be a holiday giveaway, and complimentary food/beverages will be served to gym members, the press and the surrounding community.
“It’s hard to believe that just a year ago, there was practically nothing at all left in the gym other than the charred corner posts and burned metal frame of the ring. Everything inside was completely destroyed,” said DeGuardia. “Now, exactly one year later, we have a brand new beautiful gym thanks to everyone’s hard work and the donation from Everlast. Being the fire happened right around Christmas, we felt that it would be a great time to have the grand re-opening and combine it with our first annual Holiday party and giveaway.
It is our way of expressing our gratitude that no-one was injured in the fire and to acknowledge the tremendous community support we have received. We would like everyone from the neighborhood and boxing community to come out and join us at the Morris Park Boxing Club for an enjoyable Holiday celebration.”
