U.S. Immigration KOs Alfredo Angulo

The career – and life – of junior middleweight contender Alfredo Angulo has just hit a major snag. The United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agency has essentially banned Angulo from fighting professionally in the United States, ruling that he is in the country as an illegal alien. Angulo, the #4 rated junior middleweight boxer according to ProBoxing-Fans.com, could be deported from the country, and his time as a major network, HBO sponsored fighter, could be coming to an end as well.

Little else is known besides these initial reports at this time, but surely more will be revealed over the next few days and weeks as Angulo’s promoters and managers try to get a solid grasp on the situation. But clearly this is a situation that holds major consequences from Angulo, and it’s unknown how this well play out.

The bright side for Angulo is that a fighter like Antonio Margarito can go from the black sheep of the sport, mired in an illegal hand wrapping fiasco and banned from fighting for a year by the California State Athletic Commission, and the rest of the United States, to landing a showdown on PPV against the sport’s pound for pound king and biggest attraction, Manny Pacquiao, in about 18 months time. So for Angulo, with no burned bridges in the sport and only with a questionable immigration status, he should be able to rebound from this situation and perhaps be a part of some major international bouts, in locales ranging from his home country of Mexico to other hotbeds across the globe in the mean time, while all of this settles out.

The junior middleweight division has been hard pressed to keep its prospects as of late. First, it was James Kirkland being sent to jail, and having to pause his promising career, and now it’s this situation with Angulo. It will be very interesting to see how this plays out over the coming months, and even the coming years. This will be a toe to toe battle that’s waged in the courtroom, and Angulo will definitely need some legal wrangling in order to see a positive result in this match-up.
