Professional boxing returns to San Diego when promoter Bobby D Presents puts on “San Diego Fights” at the home for southern California boxing, the Four Points by Sheraton in Kearny Mesa, a suburb of “America’s Finest City”. Featured in the main event is Bobby DePhilippis’ most promising prospect, undefeated twenty-five year old junior welterweight Emmanuel “Renegade” Robles (8-0-1, 3KOs) as he takes on cross border rival Mario “Popeye” Hermosillo (12-10-3, 2KOs) of Tijuana, Mexico, in an eight round clash.
The slick boxing Robles is coming off his most defining and impressive win in his last fight when after struggling in the early going, he stopped the hard hitting Joshua Marks in four rounds. Robles caught Marks with a devastating uppercut that forced Marks to take several steps back until back was against the ropes. Robles took full advantage and after scoring series of power punches, referee David Mendoza stopped the contest.
The win marked his fourth straight since the only blemish on his record, a hard fought draw against fellow undefeated Adrian Vargas.
Now Robles will try to score for the hometown team when he takes on over the border visitor Hermosillo who despite his much to be desired ledger, is known as a tough out for anybody including prospects Brandon Bennett, Alejandro Luna and world title challenger Pablo Cesar Cano.
The Tijuana tough guy is coming off a six round unanimous decision win over the experienced Ulises Duarte a short month ago.
Also featured in the co-main event is up and rising light welterweight Maurice “Mighty Mo” Hooker (9-0-1, 7KOs) of Dallas, Texas. The hard hitting Hooker has just recently made a move to southern California for training camp and is looking to impress the local fans with his exciting style that has given him five stoppage wins in his last six fights. In his last fight, it took him all six rounds to finally stop John Montes but only two to stop Adam Ealoms prior to that. Ealoms in his last fight went six rounds with San Diego’s Giovanni Santillan.
Returning to San Diego will be the always entertaining undefeated southpaw lightweight Leon “3rd Generation” Spinks III (5-0-1, 3KOs) in a four rounder. In his last outing, Spinks III had no trouble filing his best win to date against the 10 fight veteran Dominic Coca who Spinks III had no trouble out boxing to a unanimous decision. The bout will mark the fourth time Spinks III, who along Robles fights under the Bobby D Presents banner, fights in either San Diego or Tijuana and will look to put another impressive showing for the fans of his home away from his St. Louis home.
Making his pro debut will be San Diego popular stand out Prince “Tiger” Smalls (0-0-1) in a four round featherweight contest against Jose Garcia (0-3) of Santa Ana, CA. In his much anticipated pro debut last month in Tijuana, Smalls bit more than he could chew when he went life and death with Erick “Monkey” Aguirre and escaped with a majority draw. Smalls will look to correct the wrongs and wow his hometown crowd on July 25th.
